Sean Miller, Arizona decline comment on Yahoo! report of NCAA investigation

Mum remains the word for Sean Miller and the Arizona Wildcats when it comes to the federal college basketball scandal and its potential impact on the program.

A night after Yahoo! Sports reported that the NCAA had begun a formal inquiry into Arizona’s program, both Miller and an athletic department spokesmen declined to comment.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” Miller said when asked about the report on Tuesday during his weekly press conference.

Roughly a half hour earlier, while on the Pac-12’s teleconference, Miller was asked in general terms about how he handles when things are “swirling around his program.” His response:

“You do the best that you can. Your priority is the day’s practice. Your priority is certainly the players that you have on your team. You get your guys revved up to be the best they can be every day.”

Miller and the school have remained nearly silent since March 1, when the coach adamantly denied an ESPN report that alleged Miller was caught on a wiretap discussing a pay-to-play scenario involving Deandre Ayton. Since then Miller has referred back to the statement he made at that time, declining to go any further on the topic.

In addition to the NCAA now getting involved, the Yahoo! Report stated that Miller was expected to be subpoenaed to testify at the upcoming trial of Christian Dawkins, a sports agent who was one of several people arrested by the FBI in September 2016 on various charges including bribery. Also arrested at the time was then-Arizona assistant coach Emmanuel ‘Book’ Richardson, who has since entered into a plea agreement.
