How Arizona’s commits performed in Week 11

As the Arizona Wildcats rest and recover during their bye week, let’s check in on how their future players performed in their respective high school games last week.

Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X

Result: Home victory against Antonian Prep, 55-14

School Record: 8-1

Game Stats: 25 for 31, 4411 yds, 6 TD, 1 INT; 3 car, 7 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 230 for 332, 3632 yds, 43 TD, 5 INT; 71 car, 440 yds, 7 TD

Game Notes: Gunnell continued his high level of production, throwing for over 400 yards and six scores. He broke his second record in three weeks, becoming Texas high school football’s all time leader in career passing touchdowns, racking up the 185th of his career.

Next Game: at St. Thomas Catholic, Nov. 9

Kwabena Watson, DE/OLB, Edison

Result: Neutral-site playoff victory against Ridgeview, 42-33

School Record: 6-5

Game Stats: 5 tackles and 1.5 TFL (Unconfirmed, based on clips)

Season Stats: Unknown tackles, 17.0 TFL, 10.0 sacks (confirmed through interview)

Game Notes: Edison won their first playoff game and Watson had a good showing. He is a sure tackler and has a fantastic ability to shed blocks and attack the ball carrier. In my opinion, his best play was around the 00:52 mark. He made a nifty move, shed the blocker, and was in the QB’s face probably a second after the snap. Incredible.

Next Game: neutral-site playoff game against Central, Nov. 9

Jaxen Turner, S, Rancho Verde

Result: Home playoff victory against Tesoro, 40-28

School Record: 11-0

Game Stats: 7 tackles and 2 PBU; 4 rec, 32 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 21 tackles, 1 INT, 5 PBU; 20 rec, 284 yds, 2 TD; 9 car, 72 yds, 3 TD (Incomplete stats)

Game Notes: Turner had another solid outing. He didn’t have much production offensively but he had a good game defensively. He finished the game with just under 10 tackles and two broken up passes. I was unable to find any film on him.

Next Game: Away playoff game against Bishop Alemany, Nov. 9

Maurice Gaines Jr., CB, St. Thomas More

Result: Away victory over Capital Prep Harbor, 60-0

School Record: 5-2

Game Stats: 1 tackle and 1 PBU (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Season Stats: 3 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PBU (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: Gaines looked to have had a decent game on Saturday. He was lockdown as usual and had at least a tackle and a PBU. He also had a near-interception but just couldn’t quite come up with the ball.

Next Game: at Cheshire Academy, Nov. 9

Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt

Result: Neutral-site playoff loss to Sierra Canyon, 55-27

School Record: 5-6

Game Stats: 7 rec, 44 yds, 1 TD

Season Stats: 45 rec, 789 yds, 6 TD

Game Notes: It was a tough end to the season for the WR commit and his Mustang team, losing their first playoff game. Johnson had a solid game with seven catches and a score. Next step for him is Tucson and the Wildcats.

Sierra Canyon:

Senior Season Highlights:

Jamari Williams, OL, Cardinal Gibbons

Result: Away victory against McArthur, 21-0

School Record: 8-2

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Williams showed a lot of why Gabe Encinas and I are high on him. He owns his opponent and finishes his blocks. It’s rare that his opponent isn’t on the ground. He had another good outing as the line allowed CG runners to rack up 166 yards on the ground.

McArthur:

Senior Season Highlights:

Next Game: home playoff game against Merritt Island, Nov. 9

Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline

Result: Home victory against Berkner, 42-14

School Record: 6-2

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 10 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 1.0 sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: There wasn’t any film or stats for Bradford in Skyline’s win over Berkner

Next Game: vs. Pearce, Nov. 9

Chris Roland, DB, William Knight

Result: Neutral-site playoff game against Polytechnic, 35-7

School Record: 9-2

Game Stats: 5 tackles, 2 INT; 5 rec, 71 yds, 2 TD

Season Stats: 51 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 7 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble; 69 rec, 1150 yds, 14 TD

Game Notes: Roland had another great outing. What stuck out to me during his offensive performance was his ability to high-point the ball on both of his touchdowns. Defensively, he shows an excellent ability to dissect the play and react to it. One of his interceptions is a good example of that. He drops back and reads the QB’s eyes with enough time to fly to the area and pick the pass off.

Next game: neutral-site playoff game against El Rancho, Nov. 9

Derrion Clark, LB, South Oak Cliff

Result: Road victory against Kimball, 56-7

School Record: 8-0

Game Stats: 9 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 3.0 sacks, 1 INT

Season Stats: 77 tackles, 15.0 TFL, 4.0 sack, 1 INT (Incomplete, not all games have been updated)

Game Notes: Clark had another great game. His highlights don’t show much but the one play I liked was his interception. He dropped back and was in the right position to make the play. One of the SOC defenders swatted the ball and Clark was right there to snag it and start making his way down the fied.

Kimball:

Senior Season Highlights:

Next Game: vs. Jefferson, Nov. 8

Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit

Result: Home victory against George Ranch, 34-7

School Record: 8-1

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 115 car, 894 yds, 12 TD; 11 rec, 158 yds, 0 TD (Incomplete stats)

Game Notes: I’m super happy that there is now game film for Wiley, especially since I’ve been really interested to see his development from his junior to senior seasons. He didn’t disappoint. The George Ranch highlights below show his speed increased during the offseason, as he is able to outrun everyone on the field. It also shows his awareness to shift the ball to his outside hand, agility to bounce it to the outside, and his ability to plant his foot and run north to south. He is way more explosive than I remember. I’m impressed.

George Ranch:

Senior Season Highlights:

Next Game: at Alief Taylor, Nov. 9

Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana

Result: Away playoff loss to Cienega, 49-28

School Record: 7-4

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: It was a rough game for Marana as they fell to Cienega to end their season. The defense was the main issue for the Tigers, and from what we heard, Morgan looked really good along the offensive line. Their wasn’t any running room for Marana as they only gained 30 yards rushing. They didn’t, however, allow very many negative plays. The Tiger o-line only allowed two tackles for loss, to include a sack.

Eddie Siaumau, OLB/DE, Leone

Result: Home loss to Tafuna, 40-20

School Record: 2-5

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Siaumau and Leone dropped their game to Tafuna. I spoke with Eddie this weekend and he said he is disappointed with how the season is going. He also said he is working on getting better and getting ready for the next level.

Next Game: N/A

Kyle Ostendorp, P, Desert Vista

Result: Home playoff victory against Chaparral, 40-14

School Record: 10-1

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 28 punts, 1167 yds, 41.7 avg, 62 yd long, 12 Inside the 20

Game Notes: Desert Vista vanquished traditional powerhouse Chaparral handedly, 40-14. There weren’t any stats for Ostendorp in Desert Vista’s opening playoff win.

Next Game: neutral-site playoff game against Perry, Nov. 9

Ahina Aitogi, OL, Fort Scott CC

Result: Away loss to Iowa Iowa Central CC, 43-9

School Record: 2-7

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Fort Scott continued its rough season, dropping its game against Iowa Central CC. Aitogi moved over to the left tackle position for Fort Scott and continued his physical play. He is improving game after game, which is an encouraging sign. During the game he showed his best footwork of the season and used his hands effectively.

Iowa Central:

Season Highlights:

Next Game: vs. Dodge City CC, Nov. 10
