Commitment Analysis: 3-star offensive guard Jamari Williams

The Arizona Wildcats have landed yet another offensive lineman for the 2019 recruiting class, former Louisville commit Jamari Williams.

Analysis

Brandon Combs: Both Gabe and I have been waiting on this commitment for some time. He pledged to Louisville in the summer and a few weeks later, took a visit to Arizona. The visit went extremely well and he quickly became a priority for offensive line coach Joe Gilbert, despite his commitment to the Cardinals.

The offensive line commits are becoming a very good group. Williams definitely bolsters the talent level, and Arizona will need it in the future.

Williams brings a nice mix of what Jordan Morgan and Rocky Aitogi have to offer. He is big, physical and aggressive like Aitogi. He also has the athleticism of Morgan. He brings a nasty edge to the field and it definitely can’t be something that can’t be overlooked.

Once he engages his man, he doesn’t stop. He continues driving and plows his opponent into the ground or completely out of the play.

I really like the way he uses his hands. He uses them masterfully and keeps them inside, not allowing him to be called for penalties.

I know Gabe and I have said very similar things and there is a reason for that. We both really like Williams and agree on what he brings to the field. This is another really solid piece for Gilbert to work with.

Gabe Encinas: I love this commitment. A few months ago there had been rumors that Jamari was flirting with Arizona and even took a visit over the summer without Louisville knowing. It seemed like there was a flip coming soon but nothing seemed to happen until now, four months later.

Arizona desperately needs help on the offensive line and of the three commitments they have now, Williams is by far the most ready, despite having Rocky Aitogi come from the junior college ranks.

Still, I like the upside of all three and it’s a group that you really need Joe Gilbert to work on. But given Kevin Sumlin’s history of having been around four offensive linemen who were first-round picks, I like to think that he can evaluate the traits that work best in program.

But back to Williams. I think he has true NFL potential.

I think he can lose some bad weight and add good weight. He plays both guard and tackle but will ultimately be at guard and I think his size and lack of quickness better suit him for that position.

Overall, he’s a big, physical and aggressive and brings some nastiness to the offensive line and you can tell that it’s becoming a theme for the offensive linemen. I think he’s a better at blocking the run than pass. He’ll get a good initial push and finish the block into the ground.

One thing I really pay close attention to on offensive lineman film is the size of the opponent. A lot of these huge guys are sometimes stuffing their film going up against ends and linebackers who are maybe 200 pounds. Williams looks like he goes up against some good size and he’s not just throwing around lightweights.
