Arizona PG Aari McDonald named Pac-12 Player of the Week

The redshirt sophomore point guard is the nation’s leading scorer

Arizona Wildcats coach Adia Barnes has sky-high expectations for Aari McDonald this season, believing she can be one of the top point guards in the Pac-12.

McDonald is showing why — and then some.

The redshirt sophomore was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 32 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.3 steals per game in three games. McDonald, the nation’s leading scorer at 29.5 points per game, shot an efficient 56 percent.

The Fresno native tied Arizona’s single-game scoring record when she dropped 39 points in a loss to Loyola Marymount. She was then named MVP of the Bank of Hawaii Classic after averaging 28.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals on 64 percent shooting in wins over Seattle and Portland.

McDonald, who sat out last season after transferring in from Washington, becomes the first Wildcat to be named Pac-12 Player of the Week since Candice Warthen back in March 2015.

McDonald and the Wildcats (3-1) return to the court Friday when they host South Carolina State at 6:30 p.m. MST.
