Sports Illustrated includes Arizona, Khalil Tate on list of predictions ‘we were wrong about’

If you didn’t believe in the Sports Illustrated cover jinx before, has this season for the Arizona Wildcats convinced you?

For those that don’t remember—or who have blocked it from their memories—it was only a little more than three months ago that Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate was on the cover of SI with the statement “Hand Him the Heisman.” That was one of a handful of regional covers the magazine had for its college football preview.

Tate was a trendy Heisman Trophy pick in the preseason, having odds as good as 14-to-1 (per Bovada) in late August. Then he ran just eight times for 14 yards in Arizona’s season-opening loss to BYU, the once run-first QB suddenly a pocket passer.

In an article Thursday, highlighting the preseason predictions it got really wrong, SI noted the Tate/Heisman cover as well as the belief that Arizona was a potential College Football Playoff sleeper. It said the loss to BYU, as well as those to Houston, USC and Utah “have the Wildcats in disappointingly familiar territory: fighting to tread water in the middle of the Pac-12 South.”

Do better, SI. You too, Arizona.
