Arizona WR Stanley Berryhill III standing out in fall camp

Don’t be surprised if the walk-on becomes a fixture in the Wildcats passing game this season

Eleven Arizona Wildcats are scheduled to meet with the media in the first eight days of fall camp.

Most of them are players who were major contributors last season, like cornerback Jace Whittaker, running back J.J. Taylor, and safety Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles — you know, the usual suspects.

Then there’s wide receiver Stanley Berryhill III, a walk-on redshirt freshman who has never played a single snap of college football. He is scheduled to interview on Aug. 11.

Why? You’ll find out soon enough, his teammates say.

“He’s exciting,” Whittaker said. “Keep your eyes on him.”

The 5-foot-9 Berryhill has certainly made highlight plays before. He originates from Tucson but graduated from Orange Lutheran High School in Southern California where he had 60 catches for 1,000 yards as a senior.

He was first-team All-District, a two-time team captain, and the first player in his high school’s history to score a touchdown four different ways in a game.

“Very quick and shifty,” Whittaker described Berryhill’s game. “He can change speeds. You know he knows what he’s doing with the ball.”

Berryhill did not play in 2017 but he made quite the impression in April, hauling in seven passes catches for 103 yards and a touchdown in Arizona’s spring game. Berryhill was getting reps in the slot with the first- team offense.

That may have suprised onlookers in the stands, but it could become a typical occurrence this fall.

“Stanley Berryhill has improved this year a lot,” Whittaker said. “He’s going to step up and I think you guys are going to see him a lot this year, making some exciting plays on Saturday nights.”

Which means Berryhill’s New Year’s resolution is within reach.

“My goal for 2018,” he tweeted on Jan. 1, “is to earn a scholarship.”
