Arizona QB Khalil Tate nominated for award he isn’t eligible to win

How much preseason hype has Khalil Tate received? So much that the Arizona Wildcats quarterback is even getting pimped for national awards that he’s technically not able to win.

Tate was one of 48 quarterbacks named to the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which since 1987 has been given to college football’s top passer.

More specifically, the best QB who is either a “college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.”

Tate is neither. He is a true junior entering his third year of college, so by definition he wouldn’t be eligible for the Golden Arm Award until the 2019 season.

There’s no indication the Golden Arm Foundation has changed its eligibility criteria, which would mean Tate’s inclusion on the watch list is a mistake. But he’s not the only non-senior/fourth-year junior to be named.

Others that appear to be erroneously nominated include Oregon’s Justin Herbert and Utah’s Tyler Huntley, among the nine Pac-12 QBs on the list, as well as Michigan’s Shea Patterson, South Carolina’s Jake Bentley and UCF’s McKenzie Milton.
