Arizona football open scrimmage notes

Some notes, video, and other things from UA’s open scrimmage

The Arizona Wildcats held their first open scrimmage of the spring on Saturday at Arizona Stadium.

Here are some notes. Arizona’s official spring game is Saturday, April 14.

Other notes

• The first play of the scrimmage was a deep 50-yard pass from Khalil Tate to Shawn Poindexter down the far sideline.
• Josh Pollack missed a 52-yard field goal, but made a 48-yard field goal.
• Shun Brown caught a 5-yard TD in the back corner of the endzone from Tate. He was wide open.
• Bryce Wolma caught a short TD from K’Hari Lane.
• Anthony Mariscal, a safety turned running back, had a big day. He broke a 47-yard run to get Arizona near the red zone, then capped the drive with a TD run.
• Gary Brightwell was the No. 3 running back, but left the scrimmage on crutches.
• Cornerback Sammy Morrison was working with the third-team, but exited with a shoulder injury.
• Lorenzo Burns broke up a deep pass between Tate and Poindexter.
• Pressed up against the goal line, Tate found Brown over the middle for a 30-yard gain. Brown was wide open.
• Nathan Tilford had a 25-yard touchdown run in which he evaded several defenders and reversed field. He looked promising.
• Khalil Tate didn’t run much, and did not do any of those designed rollout players that were common under Rich Rodriguez.
• Jake Glatting and Matt Aragon punted. They didn’t use the rugby style kicks that were common under Rodriguez. Cal grad transfer Dylan Klumph will join the team in the fall, and will probably win that job anyway.
• For the most part, the defense looked pretty good. The defensive line did a nice job against the run, which makes sense given its improved size and Arizona breaking in a new center and guards (starting center Nathan Eldridge didn’t play).
