No. 7 Arizona sweeps UC Davis, Fresno State in Day 2 of Kajikawa Classic

The Wildcats breezed through a Saturday doubleheader in Tempe

No. 7 Arizona had little trouble getting through day two of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe.

The Wildcats (3-1) swept UC Davis and Fresno State in a doubleheader by a combined score of 19-2.

Arizona topped UC Davis 6-1 in game with the help of a trio of home runs and a strong pitching performance from sophomore transfer Alyssa Denham.

Denham gave up one earned run in a complete game outing. It was Denham’s second start of the season after going five innings and allowing one unearned run in the season opener Northwestern Friday.

The Wildcats offense provided Denham with early run support, scoring one run in the first inning followed by a three-run homer from Reyna Carranco in the second inning.

Arizona didn’t score again until the sixth inning, when Dejah Mulipola and Aleah Craighton hit back-to-back home runs.

The Wildcats had plenty of other opportunities to score but left 13 runners on base.

In game 2 of the day, Arizona did cash in on some more runs, as the Wildcats topped Fresno State 13-1 in a five-inning run-ruled affair.

Jessie Harper got things rolling in the first inning when she hit a two-run homer, her first home run of the season. An RBI from Alyssa Palomino made it 3-0 after one.

The Wildcats added five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Palomino.

An RBI double from Dejah Mulipola in the third inning pushed the score to 9-0.

In the top of the fourth, Harper hit her second home run of the game, a three-run blast, to bring the lead to 12-0.

On the mound, Taylor McQuillin made a bounce-back start after giving up five earned runs in a 9-4 loss to No. 24 Oklahoma State Friday.

McQuillin pitched a clean first three innings before allowing an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.

Arizona responded in the top of the fifth with its 13th run, coming on a pinch-hit RBI double by Robyn Porter.

McQuillin wrapped up the win with a scoreless bottom of the fifth.

Arizona concludes the weekend with a 2 p.m. MST matchup against New Mexico on Sunday.
