Arizona lands Cal punter Dylan Klumph

The grad transfer should solve UA’s punting woes immediately

The Arizona Wildcats were embarrassingly bad at punting in 2017, but there is one way to fix that problem: Add a player who can punt well.

They have done that.

Arizona landed California Golden Bears punter Dylan Klumph (pronounced Klump) on Friday, he announced on Twitter.

“Coach (Jeremy) Springer has blessed me with my next chapter in life by believing in me and my talents! I cannot express how and excited I am to be able to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Arizona,” he tweeted.

“Time to put Arizona punting back on top! Bear down!”

Klumph, a senior, is a grad transfer so he can play immediately.

But just how good is this guy? He punted 46 times for 1,976 yards in 2017, an average of 43.0 yards per kick. That was the 39th-best mark in college football and fourth-best in the Pac-12.

Klumph’s career punting average — 44.2 — is the best in Cal history.

For reference, Arizona’s punters, Josh Pollack and Jake Glatting, kicked 46 times for 1,632 yards in 2017 — a 35.5 average.

So Klumph is not just an upgrade for Arizona but a significant one, and he should help UA’s special teams significantly from day one.
