2018 3-star F Sam Froling could commit ‘within the next week or two’

The Aussie would be the first post-FBI investigation commitment for Arizona

Earlier in December, Australian forward Sam Froling spent two weeks crisscrossing the United States, taking official visits to four schools — Wichita State, Creighton, Maryland, and Arizona.

The 2018 three-star prospect is now back in Australia where he will “probably” decide on a school “within the next week or two,” he told 247Sports’ Evan Daniels.

When recounting his Arizona visit, the 6-foot-9, 205-pound Froling likened himself to a certain stretch-forward that Arizona fans will fondly remember.

“Sean Miller is an exceptional coach,” he told Daniels. “They’re a very respected program and looking at the guys they’ve had at my position in the past, like Lauri Markkanen, and them just being able to improve players from my position.”

The Aussie is ranked 83rd in 247Sports’ rankings, but 130th when factoring in other site’s rankings. In my experience, 247 usually is more up to date than other sites, which means Froling will likely see a boost once he commits to a program.

“I think I bring a threat offensively,” Froling told Daniels. “I think I’m pretty tough to guard. I can stretch the big guys out or take a smaller guy in the paint. I’m a good rebounder and I think I can make plays for other guys.”

UA has signed two players in its 2018 class in Brandon Williams and Shareef O’Neal, both of whom committed before the program was implicated in the FBI’s recruiting bribery and corruption probe back in September.

Sean Miller recently said the Arizona Wildcats will likely sign four players, but they could theoretically sign five to seven players when accounting for the anticipated losses following this season.

Landing Froling wouldn’t be a huge splash, but it would be UA’s first post-FBI commitment and a rare dose of positive recruiting news for a program marred by uncertainty because of the federal investigation.

And perhaps a commitment from Froling could signal to other unsigned prospects that the penalties that may come down on the UA program are less severe than many believe — or at least not severe enough to deter them away.

As in many cases, all one needs is a small step to get the ball rolling.
