Roadrunners out-match Condors, extend point-streak to nine games

Special teams assist Tucson in high scoring affair with Bakersfield

The Tucson Roadrunners are continuing to impress hockey fans nationwide as they defeated the Bakersfield Condors 6-3 at the Tucson Convention Center on Friday.

Tucson breezed through the win Friday, with major puck possession moving in their favor. Not only did the Roadrunners outshoot their opponents 42-26, but the team took significant advantage over a lacking Condors special teams unit, scoring twice on the power play and once while shorthanded.

The Roadrunners weren’t perfect on the penalty kill either, however. They did amount for 31 penalty minutes and allowed for two goals while a down a skater.

“Special teams were big on both sides tonight,” Roadrunners forward Dylan Strome said, “but I think we were the better team five-on-five, and it showed out there.”

Strome stood out once again for the Roadrunners. He was responsible for four of the Roadrunners six points Friday, scoring two goals and two assists.

Injury Update

Nearing the end of the third period, Roadrunners forward Conor Garland dove to block a Condors shot with the puck appearing to hit his knee. Garland was able to get up under his own power, however his injury was very apparent.

He stumbled several times and tried to skate on one foot for the duration of the defensive shift before he was able to make it to the Roadrunners bench. Garland later left to the locker room a few minutes later. There is no official status from the Roadrunners on Garland’s injury at this time.

Looking Forward

Tucson’s win puts them at a nine game point streak (7-0-2) since losing their home opener to the San Diego Gulls last month. At 16 points and a points percentage of 0.800, the Roadrunners now sit at first in the American Hockey League.

“We just gotta keep it going,” Nick Merkley said, “we gotta keep doing the little things right and hopefully the wins keep coming.”

The Roadrunners will now look to continue their point streak and complete the sweep over Bakersfield on Saturday before hitting the road to for part two of the Interstate 8 Border Cup Series with San Diego.
