Allonzo Trier named to AP Preseason All-America team

Not that surprising

Allonzo Trier is expected to have a big year for the Arizona Wildcats this season, to say the least.

It’s not often that a player of Trier’s caliber stays in college for three seasons, and his talent along with experience should make for a lethal combination in his junior year.

Relatedly, Trier was named to the Preseason AP All-America team Monday, along with Michigan State’s Miles Bridges, Notre Dame’s Bonzie Colson, Villanova’s Jalen Brunson, and Missouri’s Michael Porter Jr.

The key for Trier this season is staying on the court. In his first two seasons at Arizona, the guard has suffered some sort of setback.

As a freshman, Trier broke his hand which sidelined him for seven games. He was then suspended for the first 19 games of his sophomore season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

So Trier’s junior year is a chance for him to have a full season to lead the Wildcats, which he admitted is “probably the only reason” he returned for a third year in the first place.

Trier, who averaged 17.2 points per game last season, spearheads an Arizona roster that may very well be the best Sean Miller has had in Tucson.

Ranked No. 3 to start the season, Arizona is deep, has an outstanding blend of youth and experience and, of course, lots of talent.

Trier is the face of the team, and while individual accolades are nice, leading Arizona back to the Final Four would cement him as one of the greatest players in school history.

In the meantime, Arizona fans should embrace the fact they get to watch Trier suit up in red and blue for another year. Scorers like him don’t come around — and stay around — that often anymore.
