Recruiting update: Arizona lands OL commit, Issaiah Johnson wins award, more

It was a big week for Arizona and its commits

It was a good week for the Arizona Wildcats both for the current team and on the recruiting trail.

The team beat California in a double overtime thriller, Khalil Tate and Colin Schooler grabbed Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, and the ‘Cats got their 16th commit of the 2018 class.

Let’s dive into it with this week’s SitRep.

Donovan Laie, OT

Oceanside Pirates: 3-5

We’ll start with Arizona’s newest commit. Laie is a player who Arizona needs in this class: a big, physical, Polynesian offensive lineman.

On the field, the Pirates picked up their third win on the season over San Pasqual, 24-21.

Midseason Highlights

David Watson, OT/DT

2017 Stats: 23 tackles, 5.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks, 1 PBU, 1 forced fumble

Amphitheater Panthers: 2-7

The Panthers had their two-game winning streak ended Friday night with a 34-8 loss to Rio Rico. There were no stats or clips of Watson in action.

Martell Irby, RB

Morse Tigers: 4-4

Morse came away with a 48-13 annihilation of Scripps Ranch to get to .500 on the season.

I was unable to find any stats or clips of Irby. However, his midseason highlights are below and after rewatching them, it’s clear how dynamic Irby is. I also laughed at how silly he made his opponents look.

Armani Adams, S

2017 Stats: 46 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks, 1 PBU

Lakewood Spartans: 5-1

The Spartans had a bye week this past week. However, during Lakewood’s 14-6 win over Gibbs on October 13th, Adams recorded 4 tackles, 2.0 TFL, and 2.0 sacks.

Jhevon Hill, CB

2017 Stats: 26 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 2 INT, 5 PBU

Cajon Cowboys: 7-1

Hill’s Cajon squad continues to put in a solid effort week in, week out. The Cowboys recorded their seventh win with a 33-16 effort over Yucaipa.

Hill recorded two tackles, a TFL and a PBU.

Issaiah Johnson, LB

Los Alamitos Griffins: 5-3

Los Al won their Thursday night contest against Huntington Beach-Edison 24-16. Johnson tallied 17 tackles, 3 sacks and 2 PBUs and was named Orange County Defensive Player of the Week.

Thomas Marcus, WR

2017 Stats: 15 rec, 365 yds, 8 TD; 14 car, 160 yds, 2 TD

San Diego Cavers: 8-0

The Cavers continued their perfect season with a 33-14 win over Patrick Henry.

Marcus came out of the contest with 63 yards on two catches with a score and 14 yards on the ground. Marcus shows a consistent ability to highpoint the ball on 50-50 passes. Below are his highlights against Patrick Henry.

Jaiden Dockery, S

Lancaster Tigers: 3-4

The Tigers lost a close game to Mansfield Timberview 30-24. Dockery didn’t have any stats but there was a clip of him during kickoff coverage. He had a great tackle to stop the returner.

Mykee Irving, DT

2017 Stats: 14 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1.0 sack

Calabasas Coyotes: 7-1

The Coyotes defeated Newbury Park 44-24. I was unable to find any stats or clips on Irving for Friday.

But for Calabasas’ only loss to Sierra Canyon, Irving had four tackles with a sack. For his first sack of the season, he did a nice job of shedding the block to chase down the scrambling quarterback.

Darrius Smith, RB

Dawson Eagles: 5-1

Smith and the Dawson Eagles squeaked out a 38-35 win over Pearland on Friday to continue their strong season. I was unable to to find any stats for Smith but I did find a clip of a nice 52-yard run by Smith up the middle.

Jake Peters, TE

2017 Stats: 8 rec, 87 yds, 0 TD

Santa Margarita Catholic Eagles: 5-3

The Eagles lost a thrilling nail-bitter to St. John Bosco 40-38. During the game, Peters continued to show his great blocking ability, opening massive holes for runners. He also had eight yards on a catch. Below are his highlights from the game.

Jamarye Joiner, QB

2017 Stats: 85-for-152, 1,502 yds, 19 TD, 6 INT; 87 car, 850 yds, 15 TD

Cienega Bobcats: 9-0

The Bobcats remain perfect after a 56-55 win over Ironwood Ridge on Friday. Joiner kind of went off. One thing I like was his escapability, hitting his receiver on the run in the end zone. He had great runs throughout the game and only had two mistakes.

He went 13-for-20 for 211 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 picks through the air. On the ground he 207 yards and a score on 10 carries. Below are his highlights from the game.

McKenzie Barnes, CB

2017 Stats: 22 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 23 PBU

Edison Tigers: 4-4

The Tigers fell to .500 this season after dropping Friday’s game to Sanger 27-20. Barnes’ highlights from Sanger are below.

I was able to find his stats against San Joaquin Memorial and they were ridiculous. He had three tackles but nine.....NINE PBUs. Nine. Not sure I’ve ever seen anything like that before.

Tre Adams, WR

2017 Stats: 19 rec, 335 yds, 6 TD

Wakeland Wolverines: 4-3

Wakeland, frankly, didn’t have a great game Friday, losing to Lone Star 45-14. Adams did have a nice 37-yd catch down the sideline to get the Wolverines in the red zone.

Haki Woods, CB

2017 Stats: 32 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1 INT, 10 PBU

Pima Aztecs: 2-6

Pima lost a close game to Arizona Western 28-23 on Saturday. I was unable to find any stats for Woods but his highlights were impressive. He played incredibly physical and punished any ball carrier he came into contact with. His highlights are below.

Recruiting Notes

  • High 3-star Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, CA) offensive guard Chris Murray told scout.com that he would be taking an official visit to Tucson this weekend for UA’s homecoming game against Washington State. It will be a long shot for the ‘Cats to land him, but it’s always good to get him on campus for a visit. This will be at least something to keep an eye on after the visit but right now I feel like either Notre Dame or Stanford have the edge.
