Arizona basketball: Kobi Simmons signs ‘two-way’ contract with Memphis Grizzlies

It looks like Simmons will be spending most of his rookie season in the G League

Kobi Simmons officially signed with the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, but it looks like he will be spending most of his rookie season in the NBA G League.

Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal reports Simmons signed a two-way contract with the Grizzlies.

A two-way contract, a new tool for NBA teams under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, will allow Simmons to occupy the 16th or 17th spot on Memphis’ roster, but the catch is he can only spend a maximum of 45 days in the Association.

The rest of the time he will be with the Memphis Hustle, the organization’s G League affiliate.

According to Vice.com’s outline of two-way contracts, Simmons’ base salary will be $75,000 with the ability to earn a prorated portion of the NBA rookie minimum.

Since Simmons can spend no more than 45 days on Memphis’ active roster, his earning potential is capped at $279,000 (not including potential endorsements, of course).

All things considered, it’s a solid gig for the 19-year-old who went unselected in the 2017 NBA Draft.

The former Wildcat will have plenty to work on over the next year — his defense and ball handling ability, especially — but he will get to do so against quality competition while making a decent salary and playing under NBA rules.

Simmons will unofficially debut with the Grizzlies on July 8 in Las Vegas Summer League.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 8.7 points per game in his lone season with the Arizona Wildcats.
