Arizona basketball recruiting: Wildcats land 2018 5-star point guard Brandon Williams

Williams is the No. 20 player in his class

Five-star point guard Brandon Williams has committed to the Arizona Wildcats, he announced Tuesday on Twitter.

The Los Angeles native becomes the second member of Arizona’s 2018 class, joining Shareef O’Neal as the foundation for what should be another solid class for Sean Miller and the Arizona program.

Williams, out of Crespi High School, is the No. 20 player in the 2018 class and the No. 7 point guard.

At 6-foot-1, Williams brings a plethora of talent to the court. However, that talent hasn’t been on display for nearly a year as he sat out his junior season with a knee injury.

That injury seems to have recovered nicely, though, as Williams said he’s hoping to be back on the court in July.

“He’s just a really good basketball player,” Crespi head coach Russell White told AZ Desert Swarm in February. “He can score it, can pass it. [He] will need to defend more at the next level, but that’s not abnormal.”

While Williams is best known for his scoring ability, his passing skill shouldn’t be looked down on.

“I think (his passing ability) is pretty natural,” White said. “Things like that, coaches can coach and talk all they want, I think it’s pretty natural, to be frank. He’s a willing passer…I think it takes a knack to know there are guys around you that can score and want to score.”

But when it comes to crunch time, Williams will likely want the ball in his hands.

“His ability to put the ball in the hoop are elite for his level. He has a knack for making plays at the right time,” White said.

With Parker Jackson-Cartwright entering his final year in Tucson, Williams will join Alex Barcello, who will be a sophomore in 2018, in the backcourt leading the Wildcats’ offensive push.

In last seasons Nike Peach Jam Tournament, Williams averaged 18 points per game on 46 percent shooting.

The highly-ranked guard picked Arizona over Kansas, UCLA, Gonzaga, and USC.
