Arizona basketball: Wildcats plan to add two more players this offseason

Which means Rawle Alkins and/or Chance Comanche likely won’t be back next season

As the Arizona Wildcats wait for Rawle Alkins and Chance Comanche to make their NBA Draft decisions, Sean Miller says he expects Arizona will add six players this offseason.

Currently, the team has four signees in what is the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class.

“I would expect two more (to be added),” Miller said Wednesday in Phoenix. “I think we’ll bring in a class of six. And I know some of you are curious who’s going to leave, who’s going to stay, but if I knew I’d tell you. I do know that those four are coming in and everybody can expect a class of six.”

While Miller says he doesn’t know what Alkins and Comanche are going to do, at least one of them would have to leave for the NBA in order for the Wildcats to add six players this offseason, since teams are only allowed to have 13 scholarship players.

That could change if Talbott Denny’s request for a sixth year of eligibility is denied, but that is not expected to be the case.

Here’s what the Wildcats’ scholarship situation would look like for 2017-18 if they do indeed add two more players:

The Wildcats are in pursuit of several players, including five-star recruits Brian Bowen and Trevon Duval, along with Pitt grad transfer Cameron Johnson and Duke transfer Chase Jeter.

Johnson is expected to choose between Arizona and Kentucky.

Meanwhile, Arizona, UCLA, USC, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Cal, UNLV, and Washington are in the mix for Jeter, who is looking to move to a school in the West.

Johnson and Jeter will be visiting Arizona together this weekend.

Aside from Johnson, there are a number of other grad transfers on the market, and you can find the full list of them here.

Unlike most grad transfers, however, Johnson has two years of eligibility left. Jeter, who is not a grad transfer, will have to sit out a year before playing at whichever school he chooses to attend.

Comanche and Alkins have until May 24 to decide if they will return to Arizona. Alkins received an invite to the NBA Combine, while Comanche has not, but both are believed to be leaning toward going pro.
