Wildcat Wrap: Lauren Marker picks up 100th career victory

The first women’s tennis player in two decades to reach the century mark

The Arizona Wildcats women’s tennis team lost 6-1 to No. 4 Stanford over the weekend, but that one victory was an historic one as it was senior Lauren Marker’s 100th career match victory as a Wildcat. She becomes the first Arizona player to reach that mark since current head coach Vicky Maes did it back in 1998.

"I'm really happy about getting to 100," said Marker. "It was a long term goal I had set for myself during my freshman year, so to finally reach it is a great feeling. I couldn't have gotten to this point without all of my awesome and dedicated coaches who have helped so much over the years. They all played a part in getting here."

After this weekend’s losses to No. 4 Stanford and No. 12 Cal, Arizona is now 9-6 overall, and 1-3 in Pac-12 play.

Men’s tennis

The men’s team also picked up a single victory over the weekend, taking out San Diego State in San Diego 4-3. They now have an overall record of 9-9 this year.

"We bounced back from a tough loss yesterday to scrap a win out at SDSU," said head coach Clancy Shields. "This was almost an identical match, but this time we were able to step over the finish line. The guys should be extremely happy with the progress they have made in the last couple weeks. We are so far from what we are capable of, but we have taken ownership of the program and out moving in the right direction."

Men’s golf

Men’s golf finished tied for 8th at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, 51 shots behind tournament champ ASU. George Cunningham finished T-16 on the individual leaderboard.

"I played really well today for how I scored," Cunningham said of his performance. "My game is feeling solid and will hopefully come together soon. Hopefully as a team we can stop making the little mistakes and have some high finishes to try and make regionals."

Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball was in Hawaii for the week, competing in tons of matches and also sending out pictures to make everyone on the mainland jealous.

Overall, they went 2-3 in matches that counted towards their overall record, and are now 6-5 on the year. Currently ranked 7th in the nation, Arizona lost to No. 1 USC, No. 4 Florida State, and No. 5 Hawaii. So they’re losing to higher ranked opponents, but will need the second and third pairings to step things up a bit. They were winless on Saturday against USC and Hawaii.

Gymnastics

The Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships took place at Stanford this weekend, and Arizona ended up finishing 7th out of 8 teams that were there. Utah took home the crown for the third time in the last four years. The silver lining for GymCat fans though? ASU was the last place team.

Women’s swimming and diving

Stanford won the women’s swimming and diving National Championship, the 496th national title for the Pac-12 as a conference. Arizona placed 16th in the team event. The 200 medley relay team of Taylor Garcia, Kennedy Lohman, Annie Ochitwa, and Katrina Konopka earned All-America honors by placing sixth in the finals.

Konopka, Ochitwa, Morgan Ginnis, and Garcia also earned All-America honors in the 200 free relay by placing fifth in those finals. Junior Tjasa Oder also finished 11th in the 1,650 free as the best individual performance by a Wildcat over the weekend.

The men’s championships begin on Wednesday.

Track and Field

This was the first outdoor track meet for the Wildcats this year, and they dominated some lesser competition.

"I thought we had a great meet today," head coach Fred Harvey said. "Our guys came out and competed the way I wanted them to this week. It wasn't the highest level of competition, but our guys still came out and competed, so I can say we had a good first outdoor meet."
