Arizona basketball: Rawle Alkins’ finger injury vs. Saint Mary’s the first he’s ever suffered

This probably makes the whole thing more impressive

There’s a first time for everything, and for Rawle Alkins, this particular first time couldn’t have come at a worse time.

The Arizona Wildcats were struggling early on against Saint Mary’s, and to add to the misery, Alkins came off the court holding his hand, immediately going back to the locker room to get x-rays on his injured right index finger.

But the freshman from Brooklyn would come back into the game despite suffering a fracture and dislocation, and helped carry the team to another Sweet Sixteen.

And to top it all off, this was the first time that Alkins has suffered an injury of any kind.

“I’ve never been injured before seriously other than this,” Alkins said after the game. “Knock on wood.”

Later, he said that the most serious injury he suffered before this finger thing was “cramps”.

“I like to fight through adversity, and I like to think of myself as a warrior and a savage, and I just wanted to win,” Alkins continued. “That was the biggest thing.”

It’s not like his hand went numb either with the finger coming out of place momentarily.

“8.5,” Alkins rated his pain on a scale of 1-10. “It’s a lot.”

That savage life never, ever stops.
