It was a very successful week for the Arizona Wildcats in the major sports (basketball, baseball, softball), but let’s get caught up on all things non-rev in the latest edition of Wildcat Wrap.

Beach Volleyball gets revenge in Tempe

After going just 1-2 in their opening weekend — including a loss to ASU — Arizona went up to Tempe and won each of their matches to improve to 4-2 on the season. One of those wins came against the rival Sun Devils, evening their season series at one apiece.

ASU took the matches between the top two groups, but Arizona’s 3, 4, and 5 groups all came up with two-set victories to give the Wildcats the advantage.

Arizona went on to beat Texas A&M Kingsville and New Mexico on Sunday to get the three weekend victories.

The Wildcats will be heading to Hawaii later this week for a plethora of matches including USC, Hawaii, and Utah.

Women’s Golf takes Mountain View Collegiate

Arizona was the only team that shot under par on the weekend, posting a team score of -14 to take home the victory by 21 total strokes.

The highlight of the team’s performance was senior Wanasa Zhou, who won her first-career individual title with a score of -13.

"I felt I played extremely well the first two rounds, posting my career best," she said afterwards. "Nerves kind of got in the way during the third round, however I fought really hard on the back nine and maintained a good lead going into the last hole. My driver and putter were really good this week, which gave me the chance to make many birdies out there, and the course just fits my eye really well and boosted my confidence quite a bit.

“It feels great to win my first tournament as an individual and even better winning as a team. This win means a lot to me especially as a senior and hopefully I can keep the good work up for the rest of the season!"

Divers head to NCAA Championships

Senior divers Sally Hackett and Karolyn Loftus qualified for the NCAA Championships in platform. They will compete in Indianapolis from Wednesday through Saturday this week.

Five Track All-Americans

U of A closed the indoor season out with several honors at the NCAA Championships in College Station. Four Cats earned first-team All-American honors (Justice Summerset (high jump), Sage Watson (400m), Lisanne Hagens (high jump), and Aaron Castle (shot put)) while Claire Green was second-team All-America in the 3,000 meters.

"I am so proud of how our athletes handled themselves at this Championship," head coach Fred Harvey said. "This is the hardest NCAA Championship to qualify for and score in. Sage and Justice did a fantastic job, Sage broke her own school record and Justice was the top freshman high jumper in the country."

The outdoor season begins this Friday in Tucson.

Gymnastics finishes regular season

For the final time before the conference tournament, Arizona gymnastics took the floor against BYU in Provo.

However, the Cats fell short by a score of 195.525 to 196.350. They will compete in the Pac-12 Championships this coming weekend, which are being held at Stanford.

Women’s tennis splits, men fall in Denver

The women’s tennis team opened up Pac-12 play by hosting Colorado and Utah. They were able to beat the Buffs 4-0, but lost to the Utes 4-3.

"I'm disappointed with the loss," said head coach Vicky Maes after the Utah match. "We knew Utah was going to be a tough team. In singles, obviously Lauren (Marker) is doing a great job. To be undefeated at No. 1 for as long as she has in this season is incredible. You always know what you're going to get from her. At No. 2, Sam (Czarniak) isn't physically there yet, but that's to be expected (after her injury). Paris (Corley) had a great weekend, and I was happy to see her be successful. Devin (Chypyha) is trying, but she beat herself today. Camila (Wesbrooks) has done a great job. She can play even better tennis, but she's so feisty and she found a way to win. Marie (Van Aelst) has lots of talent. She's only a freshman, so she has lots of learning to do, but she needs to be more consistent."

On the men’s side, they went winless on a road trip to the Denver area. They lost to the DU Pioneers 4-3, then lost to No. 45 Cal Poly 5-2.

"The guys are competing and leaving it all on the court," head coach Clancy Shields said after the Cal Poly loss. "They've got to keep pulling the greatness out of each other and continue to improve before Pac-12 season.”

Men’s Golf ready to tee it up again

The men’s team will be in San Diego this week.

“The San Diego Country Club is an outstanding course for high level amateur golf," said head coach Jim Anderson. "Players are rewarded with scoring opportunities when they remain patient. There are several wedge holes and reachable par-5's, but getting careless or forcing things will undoubtedly yield bogeys. The message for us this week will be patience and commitment. George (Cunningham) and Jordan (Gumberg) know what to expect and each has had a great week preparing at home. Redford (Bobbitt) also brings experience and local knowledge which will also help. I am very pleased with how coachable our team has become and David (Laskin), Briggs (Duce), and Max (Donohue) are sponges to continue learning and improving. This will be a great week for us and it has already been fun getting on the road together for spring break."
