Pac-12 Tournament: Day one results

And then there were eight

The quarterfinals for the 2017 Pac-12 Tournament are set.

All the higher seeds came away with victories to set up a great slate of games for Thursday.

(5) California 67, (12) Oregon State 62

The California Golden Bears couldn’t afford a slip up on Wednesday with their NCAA Tournament fate hanging in the balance. The Oregon State Beavers brought everything they had to the table, battling Cal until the final buzzer. The Golden Bears were able to escape, despite 25 points from Beavers guard, Stephen Thompson Jr.

Jabari Bird finished with 20 points for Cal, including a massive three-point play to put the game away with less than a minute left.

The Golden Bears play the fourth-seeded Utah Utes tomorrow.

(6) USC 78, (11) Washington 73

Elsewhere on the bubble, the USC Trojans are another Pac-12 team holding on to NCAA Tournament hope for dear life.

Needing a win over the Washington Huskies in tonight’s night cap, the Trojans withstood a fantastic first half from UW and got the win behind a 24-point, nine-rebound performance from Chimezie Metu.

USC has a shot at a huge victory on Thursday night when it squares off against its bitter rival, the UCLA Bruins.

(7) Colorado 73, (10) Washington State 63

I’d imagine Arizona Wildcats coaches and players started up their gameplan for the Washington State Cougars after tonight’s first half.

The Cougars ran out to a 14-point lead at halftime and were flat out rolling.

But, after half, Buffaloes guard, Derrick White scored 17 of his 26 points and Colorado came storming back for a 10-point win that ends the Cougars’ season.

Next up for Colorado is a date with Arizona tomorrow.

(8) Arizona State 98, (9) Stanford 88 (OT)

If the opening game of the tournament is any indication of what we’ll get the next few days — this tournament will be something special.

The Arizona State Sun Devils and Stanford Cardinal traded shots for 40 minutes and it still wasn’t enough.

The Devils held a six-point lead with less than four minutes remaining but Stanford scored the final six points of regulation, capped with a clutch bucket from Michael Humphrey with six seconds remaining to force overtime.

Despite not scoring a point for the final 3:47 of regulation, the Sun Devils exploded for 17 points in overtime, putting the Cardinal away for good. ASU forward, Obinna Oleka, finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

After Wednesday’s barnburner, the Sun Devils have to take on the top seeded Oregon Ducks.
