Arizona football: Charlie Ragle leaves the Wildcats for Cal

Tight end/special teams coach Charlie Ragle has been hired to a multi-year deal by Cal.

Charlie Ragle is leaving Tucson for Berkeley.

According to football scoop, the Arizona Wildcats’ special teams/tight ends coach will join new California Golden Bears head coach Justin Wilcox in the Bay Area. Wilcox was recently hired by Cal after they fired former Arizona assistant Sonny Dykes.

Wilcox, the former Wisconsin and USC defensive coordinator, offered Ragle a three-year deal according to the report. This will be the third Arizona assistant to bolt this offseason. The first one was Donte Williams to Nebraska, then it was Tony Dews to West Virginia, and the most surprising one yet was Ragle to Cal.

Ragle got his start in the FBS coaching ranks with Arizona. He previously coached at Scottsdale Chaparral, leading them to three consecutive state championships from 2009-11. Arizona hired him in December of 2011 as the assistant director of operations and was hired as a full time tight ends and special teams coach in December of 2012. In his three full years as an assistant coach, Arizona never fully utilized the tight ends and the special teams were subpar at best.

The value with Ragle lies in recruiting, specifically in the Phoenix area. He was a big reason why Arizona got My-King Johnson out of Tempe. He was also the lead guy in the recruitments of Keenan Walker, Michael Eletise, and Jalen Harris, all of whom had a great deal of offers to play elsewhere.

While hopefully the new hire will lead to better special teams play, Arizona will need to find a guy who can recruit the Phoenix area hard.

This also leaves the Wildcats with two assistant coach openings with spring practice scheduled to start in just over a week.
