Arizona basketball recruiting: 2018 Five-star wing Emmanuel Akot to visit vs. UCLA

The top-20 small forward will take his first trip to Tucson.

While the eyes of college basketball will be on Tucson, Arizona this upcoming weekend for College GameDay, the Arizona Wildcats are making sure their recruiting targets get to experience the hype as well.

In addition to top point guard Trevon Duval taking his official visit, the Wildcats will get their first chance to impress Emmanuel Akot, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound small forward, who will be at the game as well his coach confirmed to me. It was first reported by Corey Evans of Rivals.

The five-star Akot is in a unique spot recruiting-wise, having already narrowed his list to four schools: Arizona, Utah, Oregon, and Louisville.

He plays for Wasatch Academy in Utah, which makes the Utes a formidable opponent in this recruitment. However, with weather in the 30’s and 40’s in Utah this week, Akot will experience the beautiful Arizona spring (winter?) with 70-degree conditions expected in Tucson this weekend.

The swingman has seen his stock rise since he narrowed his list last fall. Currently ranked 18th overall on 247 Sports’ composite rankings, he’s jumped up from the mid-50’s over the winter as more sites have been able to see him play and rank him. He’s originally from Canada, which is the main reason he flew under the radar until now.

With superb athleticism and a streaky jump shot that will need to be fine-tuned, Akot has the potential to be a player that Sean Miller uses at almost any spot in the lineup. He’ll definitely need to add some muscle to his frame in order to bang on defense, but that’s the case for most players of his stature.

The 2018 class has a ways to go before we can start narrowing these things down, but getting this young man on campus for this big of a game is a great move for the Arizona staff.
