Sonoran Hot Reads: Rondae Hollis-Jefferson’s homecoming goes well

A nice trip back to Arizona for RHJ

On Saturday, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson returned to the state of Arizona as the Brooklyn Nets played at the Phoenix Suns. It went well for RHJ, as he put up career-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds. His mom was also there, and he said afterwards “Someone flew my mom out to surprise me … I got her seats in the second row. Just to have her here, that’s more so special for me than the 20 points. Someone flying her out, that meant a lot to me, to see her, to talk to her.’’

- This block by Channing Frye is kind of awesome but also would have been a goaltend in college I think

- So Washington lost to Yale. And it happened in Seattle. The entire Pac-12 was pretty underwhelming on Sunday

- More players are looking at what Terrance Ferguson did and are at least considering the idea of going to Australia instead of college

Football

- A couple of interesting stories about recruits. Josh Brown is looking to carry on his family’s legacy. Then this one is crazy, as Malik Hausman was hit by a drunk driver in Tucson, but fellow commit Tony Fields may have saved his life

- Don’t just put Arizona’s woes on its small defensive line. As Bruce Feldman points out, Washington State is doing just fine with small guys up front

- Will Parks won the game for the Broncos on Sunday by returning a blocked PAT for a touchdown

- Arizona gets Oregon State this week, so here’s our first look at the Beavs

- If you want to catch up on any of our Colorado game coverage, it’s all in here

Baseball

- Apparently Austin Rubick is at Ventura College this year instead of Arizona, and will be at Hawaii next year if he doesn’t go the MLB Draft route

- The Wild vs. Cats draft is on Monday night. It’ll be Casey Bowman and Austin Schnabel vs. Luke Soroko and Michael Hoard

Other sports

- Women’s basketball won the first game of the Adia Barnes era with a 74-59 victory over Alcorn State

- Volleyball was swept in Washington this week after dropping a five-set match to WSU

- Lauren Marker won the singles title in the UNLV Invitational

Tucson news

- Tucson native Alex Bowman had the best race of his NASCAR Sprint Cup career, leading the most laps at Phoenix. Unfortunately, he was involved in a late-race wreck that totally altered the sport’s Championship race next week. It was basically his audition for getting a ride next year, and it seems to have gone well overall

- The Roadrunners are still in first place in the Pacific Division, and have only lost one game in regulation this year

- There are still a ton of early ballots that need to be counted

- El Tour de Tucson is this week
