Colorado vs. Arizona: Notable stats from the Wildcats’ loss

Arizona out-gained the Buffs in a 49-24 loss

The 49-24 loss for the Arizona Wildcats wasn’t as bad as the scoreboard makes it look. Penalties were really what hurt the Wildcats against the Colorado Buffaloes and stalled their otherwise solid drives.

Let’s take a look at some of the stats from the game.

13 and 143

Number of penalties and yards penalized for the ‘Cats. Both were season highs and rather surprising. Coming into Saturday’s game, Arizona was only penalized an average of 5.8 times per game. This sloppy play can not be a common theme for the rest of the season if Arizona hopes to win in Corvallis and against rival Arizona State.

23

Number of first downs for Arizona’s offense. This is actually pretty good against one of the toughest defenses in the country. Arizona was able to move the ball effectively, but it was the penalties that hurt the ‘Cats. And to put it into perspective, Colorado had 25 first downs.

29:47

Time of possession for Arizona’s offense. Because Arizona was able to move the ball up and down the field, it allowed the defense to stay on the sidelines for roughly half the game. Now the secondary just needs to get healthy and slowly start getting better in their coverage. Colorado’s time of possession was 30:13.

417

Number of total yards for Arizona. Arizona actually out-gained the Buffs, who had 388 total yards. Of those 417 yards, 155 came through the air and 262 came on the ground.

The running game really got going for Arizona. Samajie Grant had his first career 100+ yard game and first career rushing touchdown (he finished with two). These came in his third career start at running back. Talk about picking it up fast. Zach Green also got into the mix, picking up his first career rushing touchdown as well.

Overall it was a decent game offensively for Arizona, but it just goes to show you the effect penalties can have. Mind you not all of them, in my opinion, were warranted, but the ones that were still hurt the team.
