Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats drop midweek game to Sun Devils 6-5

Man this team needs to find some consistent pitching

After a pretty good pitching performance overall in Corvallis, the Arizona Wildcats returned back to Tucson on Wednesday night, but the pitching did not.

Saturday starter Nathan Bannister can only do so much. He went two innings to start the game, but the rest of the staff did not fare so well as the Arizona State Sun Devils clinched the season series with a 6-5 victory.

Arizona scored four of those runs in the second inning, giving the bullpen a 4-0 cushion. ASU walked four guys in a row to start the inning, and a Scott Kingery double to left-center made it 3-0.

A Kevin Newman groundout to third resulted in another out on the base paths, ending the threat at 4-0.

And that wasn't going to get it done.

The next guy up on the mound was Robby Medel, who went three innings, giving up a run in the fourth. Medel then gave up two singles to start the sixth, which brought in Austin Schnabel.

Schnabel failed to record an out, having a liner go off his calf, and then threw the ball away on a sac bunt when he tried to get the lead runner at third.

Cameron Ming was next, who gave up a sac fly and an RBI single to give ASU the 5-4 lead. He then got a run charged to himself in the 7th after surrendering a leadoff double.

Matt Hartman allowed that Ming runner to score, giving up an RBI double that went off the left field wall. Tyger Talley cleaned up the mess, retiring the next two batters. That means Hartman was the first reliever to not have a run charged to him, which is hilarious since he didn't get an out and gave up two hard hits.

Talley went 2 2/3 scoreless, striking out the side in the ninth. If there was a way to only pitch Bannister and Talley every night, Arizona wouldn't lose. Ever.

Arizona threatened in the ninth, thanks to Kingery, Newman, and then a Dalbec single through the left side to make it 6-5. But a Riley Moore pop to right and a Zach Gibbons grounder to second ended the game.

The highlight of the night for the Wildcats ended up being this, a Scott Kingery throw in the second inning.

Games that actually count in the Pac-12 standings resume on Friday, when the Cal Bears come to Tucson. That game will start at 6 PM. This is a very frustrating team to watch right now though.
