After consecutive losing seasons to start his tenure, Arizona Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin enters a critical third year needing to make some progress on the field. The UA hasn’t had three straight losing records since doing so for six years in a row from 2000-06.

So it’s no surprise that Sumlin’s stock at the national level continues to slip as well.

CBS Sports’ annual ranking of all FBS power-conference coaches reflects this, as Sumlin checks at No. 53 out of 65, down 13 spots from 2019.

Here’s what CBS’ Tom Fornelli had to say about Sumlin, who is 9-15 with Arizona:

“His stock continues to take a hit. It’s not without reason. After going 46-19 in his first five seasons as a head coach (four seasons in Houston, one at Texas A&M), Sumlin’s teams have gone 49-39 since.”

Sumlin is ranked third-worst among Pac-12 coaches, behind first-year men Jimmy Lake of Washington and Karl Dorrell of Colorado. Just ahead of him, at No. 52, is third-year Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith. ASU’s Herm Edwards checks in at No. 30, up 24 spots from after his first season.
