The Arizona Wildcats went without a draft pick for the fourth time in the past eight years last month, though three players from last year’s squad did end up signing free agent deals shortly after the 2020 NFL Draft concluded.

And two of those undrafted rookie signings—cornerback Jace Whittaker with the Arizona Cardinals and running back J.J. Taylor with the New England Patriots—were considered the best by their respective teams, according to CBS’ Josh Edwards.

Edwards praised Arizona for adding depth at the cornerback position with Whittaker as well as Air Force corner Zane Lewis, noting that Whittaker had three interceptions in both 2019 and 2017 and could someday be a successor to Patrick Peterson.

Of Taylor, who ran for more than 3,200 yards in his Arizona career, Edwards called him a “unique weapon” who is a physical player despite being only 5-foot-6. “The Patriots likely would not have brought him in if they did not have a specific role in mind.”

CBS did not highlight Khalil Tate’s signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, though that move is interesting by itself for the fact the Eagles listed the former quarterback as a wide receiver when announcing they’d come to terms with him on a rookie deal.
