Santa Clara transfer Trey Wertz includes Arizona in final 7

NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga at Santa Clara Cody Glenn-USA TODAY Sports

Santa Clara transfer Trey Wertz listed the Arizona Wildcats among his seven finalists on Friday, the others being Ohio State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia, Butler, and Oklahoma. He was previously considering Stanford, Vanderbilt, NC State, and Xavier as well.

A sophomore guard out of Charlotte, North Carolina, Wertz averaged about 12 points in each of his two seasons with the Broncos. He will likely have to sit out the 2020-21 season before having two years of eligibility.

Wertz earned a WCC All-Freshman selection and followed that up with a solid sophomore campaign in which he shot 49 percent from the field.

Wertz has a good stroke from the outside, as he connected on 40 percent of 3-point attempts as a sophomore. He averaged about four assists last season as well. At 6-foot-4, he is the ideal size for a combo guard.

Arizona is the only west coast program on Wertz’s list, which is notable since in-person contact and on-campus visits between coaches and recruits are currently prohibited due to an NCAA dead period caused the coronavirus crisis. Virtual meetings and tours are permitted.
