The Arizona Wildcats made the addition of Ben Mathurin official on Wednesday, inking the 2020 recruit on the first day of the spring signing period.
The 6-foot-6 wing committed to the Wildcats over Baylor in January. Mathurin is the No. 119 player in the 2020 class per 247Sports composite rankings. He is originally from Montreal, Canada, but has Haitian roots.
It is too early to know what kind of role he will have in 2020-21, but there are minutes to had at small forward where Arizona has to replace Josh Green. Fellow freshman Dalen Terry, who signed with the UA in November, is another option unless the Wildcats are comfortable rolling with three-guard lineups.
Of course, Arizona will be making more roster additions eventually, as it still has up to four scholarship slots to fill for next season. The Wildcats also announced the signing of Seattle grad transfer Terrell Brown on Wednesday.
Here is what Mathurin’s 247Sports scouting report says:
Mathurin is an intriguing wing prospect with upside. He has good size, pushing 6-6 with long arms, an athletic build and impressive athleticism. Offensively, Mathurin is still an effective playmaker and scorer. He has good instincts, makes plays in transition, does a good job of making plays off the bounce and is an improving shooter from long-range off the catch. One thing Mathurin does really well is finish around the rim through contact and over contests. Defensively, Mathurin has potential to be a good multi-positional defender as he has the tools, athleticism and instincts to defend both wings and ones if he has to.
