The Arizona Wildcats are out of action for the foreseeable future, like almost all other college programs while the world deals with coronavirus. But just before everything started shutting down they got some extra help for the 2020 season.

Matthew Stefanski, an offensive lineman who began his career at Division II school Grand Valley State in Michigan, announced Thursday he was transferring to Arizona.

It is not clear if Stefanski, a 6-foot-4, 314-pound offensive guard who played for Grand Valley State in 2018, is coming to Arizona as a scholarship player or a walk-on. The Wildcats are currently seven below the 85-scholarship limit at the FBS level, with that number contingent on their remaining 15 signees from the 2020 recruiting class all showing up during the summer.

Stefanski would be Arizona’s third transfer added this offseason, along with former New Mexico defensive lineman Aaron Blackwell and ex-Oregon wide receiver Brenden Schooler, the brother of UA senior linebacker Colin Schooler.

Blackwell and Schooler are graduate transfers and are eligible to play this fall. It is not known whether Stefanski would be eligible immediately or would have to sit out a season, per NCAA rules.

Arizona’s spring practice, which began March 2 and was scheduled to resume Tuesday, is currently on hold after the school indefinitely suspended all team-related activities amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
