Arizona vs. Washington: What to expect, how to watch

Did Arizona’s star point guard and coach know that the Wildcats would be set up better for success than the Washington Huskies by this point in time? Absolutely, according to both Aari McDonald and Adia Barnes.

“Of course,” McDonald said when asked if she knew Arizona would have more success than Washington when she transferred. “I knew that the players they had coming in, like even after me, I knew that we’d be better than them. No disrespect to some of my friends on the (Huskies’) team, but we just have so many experienced players, so many skilled players and versatile players. So I just knew that we’d be in a better position.”

That doesn’t mean that Washington will be a pushover by any means. The Huskies came out on fire when the two teams met in Seattle last month. They rushed out to a 19-point lead in the first quarter, outscoring Arizona 27-8. The Wildcats took control from the second quarter on and won by eight, but the Huskies were not intimidated.

Barnes doesn’t expect it to be easy this time around, either. Washington’s defense will present some special challenges.

“They play a different style,” Barnes said. “They mix up a lot of defenses. They have a 2-3 (zone), different presses. It looks like a buzz type defense. They press a lot.... Sometimes you don’t know what they’re in. It’s a lot of junk defense, but I think that we have an advantage. I think we play faster. I think they’ll have a tough time guarding us individually so we’ll probably face a lot of zone. I think it’s going to be a hard game, but it’s a game we should be able to win at home.”

With a chance to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament and six winnable games left on the regular season schedule, it’s also a game that the Wildcats need to win.

Rankings and ratings: Arizona is ranked No. 12 in both the Associated Press poll and the USA Today/WBCA poll. Washington is unranked.

Analytics site Her Hoop Stats rates the Huskies No. 88 and the Wildcats No. 15 overall. Washington is rated the No. 146 offense and the No. 44 defense. The Wildcats are the No. 31 offense and the No. 7 defense.

The official RPI has Washington at No. 137 and Arizona at No. 21.
