Brandon’s Thoughts: Shand has not been playing football for very long, but he looks like a natural.
Shand comes from a basketball background and that has given him natural athleticism. When flipping on his film you see that aspect shine. He is raw, but he has a lot of upside.
He has a great frame and he can add about 20-30 pounds and still keep his natural abilities. He is quicker than he looks and actually has a good first step with explosiveness. This allows him to get into the backfield and use his quickness to bring down the ball carrier.
One thing I really like is that during his senior season he pretty much lived in the opposing team’s backfield.
He will need to work on his pad level a little once he gets to Arizona but that is something that can be easily fixed. He will also need technique refining but he has a phenomenal base set of skills to build upon.
Overall a solid get for Arizona who will have time to develop.
Gabe’s Thoughts: I’m a big fan of Shand and I was very shocked when I saw his recruiting ranking. He has a terrific frame at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds that can a lot of good weight. I like his athleticism and burst as well. It won’t shock me if Shand is a multi-year starter at Arizona.
Overall I think this is a very good prospect for Arizona to land in February. I feel like he is a top 1200 prospect and among the best edge-rushers that Arizona is bringing in.
