The Arizona Wildcats have hired Rutgers defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Andy Buh to round out their coaching staff, according to Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star. An official announcement will likely be made soon.

Lev reports Buh (pronounced “boo”) will coach Arizona’s outside linebackers, which can be seen as a little bit of a curveball after new defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads said during his introductory conference that he was likely going to coach them. It appears Rhoads will tutor the safeties and inside linebackers instead.

Buh, like new defensive line coach Stan Eggen, comes to the UA with decades of coaching experience. The 2020 season will be his 23rd year as an assistant coach, including nine as a defensive coordinator. Buh has coached at the FBS level since 1997 when he was Nevada’s defensive backs and special teams coach.

Since then, he has held numerous positions, including...

  • San Diego linebackers coach (2000-01)
  • Fresno State assistant (2002-05)
  • Stanford linebackers coach, then co-defensive coordinator (2007-09)
  • Nevada defensive coordinator (2010-11)
  • Wisconsin linebackers coach (2012)
  • Cal defensive coordinator (2013)
  • Kentucky outside linebackers coach, special teams coordinator (2015)
  • Maryland defensive coordinator (2016-18)
  • Rutgers defensive coordinator (2019)

Buh is listed as an Escondido, California native and has mostly coached on this side of the Mississippi, so he has plenty of West Coast ties. He coached under Jim Harbaugh for five seasons, first at San Diego then at Stanford.

Maryland’s defense was middle of the pack in the Big Ten under Buh. Rutgers’ defense ranked 125th in S&P+, almost the worst in the country. It was 112th before he got there. However, it is important to note that head coach Chris Ash, who was fired, was the one calling plays for the Scarlet Knights. Buh wasn’t in charge of playcalling at Maryland, either.

Before get into coaching, Buh was a junior college All-American at Palomar College in San Marcos, California, where he won a national championship. Buh completed his career at Nevada, where he was an all-conference player.
