The return of the XFL in 2020 also brought with it a chance for dozens of football players to get another shot at a professional career. That includes a pair of former Arizona Wildcats who made the opening weeks rosters for the league’s resurrection in February.
Scooby Wright III is on the D.C. Defenders while offensive tackle Lene Maiava has made the roster of the Los Angeles Wildcats, according to the XFL’s Web site.
This will be the third different pro league in the past year for Wright, who was at Arizona from 2013-15. He played for the Arizona Hotshots of the short-lived American Alliance of Football last spring and also appeared in an NFL preseason game for the New England Patriots before spending part of the regular season on their practice squad.
Wright, who won three major national college defensive player of the year awards as a sophomore in 2014, was a seventh round pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2016-17.
Maiava, who was at Arizona from 2011-15, was also on the Hotshots’ AAF roster for part of 2019.
The XFL begins Saturday, Feb. 8 with D.C. hosting the Seattle Dragons and Los Angeles visiting the Houston Roughnecks. His only NFL experience was with the Seattle Seahawks, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in April 2016 but released him in July of that year.
