Ex-Arizona QB Nick Foles to start for Jaguars after bye week

Former Arizona Wildcats quarterback Nick Foles will return from injury and start for the Jacksonville Jaguars when they face the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 17, head coach Doug Marrone announced Tuesday during his bye week press conference.

Foles has been sidelined since Week 1 when he fractured his left collarbone in the first quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Former Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew II has fared well in Foles’ stead, posting a 92.8 quarterback rating and a 4-4 record in eight starts.

However, the decision to start Foles over the rookie got easier over the past several weeks, as Minshew has posted a 78.9 QB rating in the last four games and most recently had a rough outing in a 26-3 loss to the Houston Texans in London.

There is also the fact the Jaguars aren’t paying Foles to be a backup. He signed a four-year, $88 million contract with Jacksonville in March, with more than $45 million guaranteed.

That came after he spent the previous two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, including the 2017 season when he took over the starting job for an injured Carson Wentz and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title (earning him MVP honors for that game).

Foles played for the Wildcats from 2009-11 and is the program’s all-time leading passer.
