Arizona soccer snaps Stanford’s shutout streak, but loses in Palo Alto

Arizona soccer did something Sunday that almost no one has done this season—score against No. 2 Stanford. And they did it twice.

Jill Aguilera‘s brace snapped the Cardinal’s eight-game shutout streak, as the Wildcats joined No. 11 USC as the only Pac-12 team to find the back of the net against Stanford this season. The Cardinal entered Sunday’s match with a 31-2 goal differential in conference play.

Aguilera chipped the goalkeeper in the 35th minute and one-timed a pass from Brooke Wilson in the 56th minute, giving her eight goals on the season. (Both of which you can watch below.)

The rest of the day belonged to Stanford, who cruised to a 6-2 win for its 12th straight victory. The Cardinal (17-1, 10-0) grabbed an early 2-0 lead and scored three goals in a six-minute stretch to help them pull away after Aguilera’s first tally.

Sophia Smith then scored seven minutes after Aguilera’s second goal, curling a shot into the top corner, past a diving Kendyll Humphreys, who replaced Hisey at the break after she conceded five first-half goals.

Stanford outshot the Wildcats, 31-8. Arizona generated six corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the match, but finished with seven on the day.

The Wildcats fall to 10-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the Pac-12. They close out the regular season Friday at home against last-place Arizona State, a must-win game for Arizona if it hopes to host the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

A loss could even knock the Wildcats out of the postseason altogether since the Sun Devils entered the week 133rd in RPI.
