The former Wildcat’s season could be over

There aren’t many Arizona Wildcats active in the NFL to begin with, but that number has dwindled the past two days.

Former UA defensive lineman Earl Mitchell announced his retirement Thursday, and Friday his former college teammate Brooks Reed was placed on injured reserve by the Arizona Cardinals, possibly ending his season.

The defensive end recently suffered a hamstring injury.

Reed, 32, has five tackles and one sack this season, serving as a situational pass rusher. He has a Pro Football Focus grade of 53.2, which is considered average. He has not missed a game since 2016.

This is Reed’s ninth season in the league, and his first with the Cardinals. He spent four seasons with the Houston Texans and four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before returning to the desert.

Reed has 22.5 career sacks in the NFL.

In four seasons with the Wildcats, Reed had 114 tackles (25 for loss) and 17 sacks. He was first-team All-Pac-10 in 2010 when he had six sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

With Reed sidelined, that leaves Will Parks (Broncos), Reggie Gilbert (Titans), Dane Cruikshank (Titans), Nick Foles (Jaguars) and Nick Folk (Patriots) as the only Wildcats on an NFL 53-man roster.
