How Arizona football’s commits fared in Week 7

John and Oywak continue to impress while Melton continues to grow

The Arizona Wildcats continued their winning streak by downing the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder this past weekend. This past weekend also saw success, and some failures, for Arizona’s 2020 commits.

Read on to see how each player performed.

Drake Dabney, TE

Cy Ranch (Cypress, TX) Mustangs: Won against Cy Park, 24-14

Game Stats: 3 rec, 22 yds, 0 TD

2019 Stats: 19 rec, 192 yds, 3 TD

There wasn’t much film on Dabney in the Mustangs’ win over Cy Park this past weekend. There was a clip of an 11-yard catch he had but that was about it. I included it below.

I also included Dabney’s mid-season highlights as well.

Jalen John, RB

Lakeridge (Lake Oswego, OR) Pacers: Won against Oregon City, 37-10

Game Stats: 1 car, 42 yds, 1 TD (stats incomplete)

2019 Stats: 74 car, 638 yds, 7 TD; 7 rec, 101 yds, 0 TD (stats incomplete)

First and foremost, I’m happy to say I was incorrect about John being injured last week against Sherwood. It took a very long time for his stats, or anything for that matter, to be updated about his performance against Sherwood. So for that, I apologize. By the way, John had 22 carries for 106 yards and 2 scores on the ground while snagging 2 passes for 12 yards as well.

Moving on to the game against Oregon City, there wasn’t much film on John. His stats weren’t updated either. But the clip below is a great example why I’m really excited about him.

John runs for a rather impressive 42-yard touchdown, showcasing his ability to see the field, change direction, break tackles, and outrun defenders.

It is always possible John redshirts as a freshman, but at the same time, he may be too good to keep off the field.

Will Plummer, QB

Gilbert (AZ) Tigers: Lost to Williams Field, 52-28

Game Stats: 27-for-45, 352 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT; 8 car, 4 yds, 2 TD

2019 Stats: 159-for-253, 2,111 yds, 18 TD, 10 INT; 79 car, 368 yds, 9 TD

By this point in the season, I think I’ve talked enough at-length about what Plummer is able to do. Friday was no different.

There were some crazy throws, as you’ll see in his highlights below, as well as some very smart ones as well.

He did throw another two interceptions but I do not know if it was his or the receiver’s fault. Regardless, it will need to continue to be an area he will need to improve in.

Alphonse Oywak, CB

Kentwood (Covington, WA) Conquerors: Won against Auburn Mountainview, 49-10

Game Stats: 1 tackle, 1.0 TFL, 1 INT; 1 rec, 47 yds, 1 TD (stats incomplete)

2019 Stats: 8 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 2 INT, 3 PBU, 1 fumble recovery; 10 rec, 264 yds, 3 TD (stats incomplete)

To start, Oywak’s stats have not been updated so all stats you see above are from me watching his film and basing it off what I’ve seen.

It does appear, however, that Oywak had another solid game.

Offensively, he had a nice catch and run of 47 yards for a touchdown. He also did a fantastic job of blocking on the edge to allow his teammate to run in for a 10-yard touchdown on another play.

On defense, he’s continued to make huge strides. On the first play that you see him on defense, he does a wonderful job of breaking on the ball and getting the interception (almost a pick six). He did this while playing zone. I’ve seen enough of his film this season to comfortably say I’m not concerned with him playing man or zone coverage.

Another play of note...again, in zone coverage, Oywak sees a running play going to his left. He quickly breaks on the play and makes a great play that almost results in a safety.

Dion Wilson Jr., DE

Orange Vista (Perris, CA) Coyotes: Won against Lakeside, 40-6

Game Stats: 2 tackles, 1.0 TFL

2019 Stats: 15 tackles, 9.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, 1 forced fumble

I was unable to find any film of Wilson during Orange Vista’s easy win over Lakeside.

However, based on his stats, I can only assume that he continued to live in the opponent’s backfield like he’s done all season.

Josh Baker, OL

Eureka (MO) Wildcats: Won against Lindbergh, 37-14

Game Stats: Not Available

Eureka continued their impressive streak as they went on to win their fifth straight game....one more game than Arizona’s streak. Coincidence?

Anyway, Baker showed to be a borderline impenetrable wall for the Wildcats.

One play I really enjoyed watching was Baker in the role of a pulling tackle. He created a massive hole for his running back, who in turn followed Baker through a good gain.

One other thing I noticed in this game, and others for that matter, is that Baker does a very good job of setting the edge for his running backs.

Dyelan Miller, WR

Centennial (Peoria, AZ) Coyotes: Won against Apollo, 51-0

Game Stats: 1 rec, 14 yds, 0 TD

2019 Stats: 15 rec, 171 yds, 3 TD

Miller only had one catch in Centennial’s destruction of Apollo.

His lone catch was a decent 14-yard pickup on a short crossing route. I do wish the Coyotes passed more. Miller is a talented wideout and would be dynamic with the ball in his hands more.

Khary Crump, CB

Culver City (CA) Centaurs: Won against Santa Monica, 47-7

Game Stats: 1 tackle

2019 Stats: 26 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 3 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Culver City stayed undefeated as they cruised to a win over Santa Monica.

Crump didn’t have a statistically standout game, recording only one tackle, but that could speak volumes about his coverage skills.

On another note, Crump will be taking an official visit to Tucson to see his future school take on the Washington Huskies this coming Saturday.

Cedric Melton, OL

Klein Cain (Houston, TX) Hurricanes: Won against The Woodlands, 28-14

Game Stats: 30 car, 163 yds, 0 TD, 5.4 YPC

Melton, once again, continued his growth this past weekend.

He is one powerful individual and really does a great job of blowing his opponent off the line or just killing their momentum with his strength. But it’s not just his power that has increased.

His footwork and hands have gotten better each week. And he’s not done there.

In one of the plays in his highlights below, he pulls across the line and becomes a wall for his running back to run behind. I’m still surprised when I watch him pull because he’s big, yet rather quick.

Tyler Loop, K/P

Lovejoy (Lucas, TX) Leopards: Won against Lebanon Trail, 56-20

Game Stats: 8 PATs made (stats incomplete)

2019 Stats: 25 PATs made; 6 FGs made (stats incomplete)

Lovejoy returned to the winning side of things as they trounced Lebanon Trail. I wasn’t able to find any stats or film on Loop but based on the score, one can assume he made all his extra point attempts.

Of note: his season stats are also based on the score of the four games Lovejoy has played.

Kameron Hawkins, LS

Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) Lancers: Los to Mater Dei, 51-14

The Lancers had a rough game as the Monarchs of Mater Dei had their way, winning 51-14.

Offensive line commit Woody Jean and the Deerfield Beach Bucks had a bye this past weekend. They take the field this weekend against Spanish River.
