Injuries are a major part of college football, and at this point in the season it’s hard to find a team that isn’t hampered by ailments to key players.

The Arizona Wildcats are well aware of this, having had to play their last game minus two starting offensive linemen, while starting (for now) quarterback Khalil Tate and starting running back J.J. Taylor have both missed games due to injury.

“Injuries are not an excuse, we’re not going to use that an excuse in our program, anywhere on this team,” Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin said Monday. “Because that’s football. Everybody’s like that.”

Arizona’s next opponent, Stanford, is not immune to the injury bug. The Cardinal played their last game, a home loss to UCLA, with only six healthy offensive linemen and with their third-string quarterback under center.

Stanford may again be using third-stringer Jack West when it hosts Arizona on Saturday, according to coach David Shaw, while also having to go the rest of the season without its very successful kicker.

Senior Jet Toner was 12 for 16 on field goals this season while making all 13 extra points. In 2018 he was 14 of 15 on field goals and made all 34 PATs.

enior K.J. Costello began the season as QB but has played in only three games due to injury. Junior Davis Mills was completing 64.5 percent of his passes with just one interception in 110 attempts before getting hurt. West, a sophomore, was 15 of 32 for 143 yards against UCLA.
