Well, that escalated quickly.
The Arizona soccer team scored two early goals, then added a second-half tally as they outclassed San Diego 3-0 on Saturday to unofficially kick off the 2019 season.
It’s UA’s one and only exhibition before it hosts Long Beach State on Thursday to open the regular season.
Senior midfielder Kelcey Cavarra scored in the 11th minute after rifling in a deflected ball from inside the box, followed by a goal from sophomore and San Diego native Iyana Zimmerman in the 34th minute. Senior centerback Samantha Falasco knocked in a third goal in the 56th minute for good measure. (You can watch two of three goals below.)

Arizona dominated the first half, holding the Toreros without a shot until late in the period. Things were a bit more even in the second half, with USD outshooting UA, 4-3.
There were no surprises in Arizona’s starting lineup, as the Wildcats trotted out 10 players who started at least one game last year, in addition to sophomore goalkeeper Kendyll Humphreys.
Here’s how they lined up:
- Kendyll Humphreys, GK
- Morgan McGarry, D
- Hallie Pearson, D
- Samantha Falasco, D
- Sabrina Enciso, D
- Emily Knous, MF
- Kelcey Cavarra, MF
- Hannah Clifford, F
- Iyana Zimmerman, F
- Jill Aguilera, F
- Jada Talley, F
Freshman Hope Hisey played the entire second half, giving both UA goalkeepers a chance to get some action before the regular season.
The newcomers who logged the most minutes were sophomore transfers Ava McCray (55) and Grace Santos (53), and freshman midfielder Madison Goerlinger (56).
Sophomore Brooke Wilson was sidelined with a foot injury, but could return next week.
