Wildcat Wrap: Arizona basketball’s roster finalized for 2019-20?

Let’s recap the week that was for the Wildcats

It’s Monday, which means it’s time to recap the week that was for the Arizona Wildcats. As always, let us know in the comment section if we missed anything.

Baseball

• We handed out grades to Arizona’s outfielders.
• Kevin Newman broke history by stringing together a 19-game winning streak for the Pirates. Unfortunately, we kinda jinxed him because that streak was snapped Sunday.
• Former Arizona standout Bobby Dalbec was named a minor league All-Star.
• Dayton Dooney and Austin Wells were named Freshman All-Americans by D1 Baseball.

Softball

• Arizona made a huge addition by landing Oklahoma transfer Mariah Lopez. The right-hander went 19-1 with a 1.25 ERA in 2019.
• Former UA ace Taylor McQuillin, who was travel ball teammates with Lopez at one point, now sees no reason why the Wildcats shouldn’t return to the Women’s College World Series next season.
• Speaking of McQuillin, we caught up with her to see how life has treated her since her UA career ended, and what it’s like to play in the NPF.
• Arizona sophomore Vanessa Foreman and recently-graduated T Statman are playing for Team Israel right now as it hopes to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. All three of Israel’s coaches have Arizona connections. Foreman and Statman threw a combined no-hitter in a 15-0 win over Turkey this weekend.

Soccer

• The WPSL regular season concluded with a bang for the Arizona-dominated San Diego Surf, who beat the previously-undefeated San Diego SeaLions, 5-3, on Saturday. UA forward Jill Aguilera scored two goals—including a rocket from distance—to propel the Surf to victory. Fellow Wildcats Iliana Hocking and Samantha Falasco started for the Surf, who also brought UA forward Brooke Wilson off the bench. Wilson scored six goals in eight WPSL games, but was limited Saturday due to a minor hip injury.

• Other UA players in the WPSL this summer include aren’t necessarily limited to: Sabrina Hillyer (AHFC Royals), Leah Carillo (Phoenix del Sol), Jules Dominguez (Phoenix del Sol), and Hope Hisey (FC Tucson).
• Sophomore midfielder Gabe Jillings was removed from Arizona’s roster. The Canadian appeared in 16 of 21 games last season, recording a goal and an assist as a reserve.
• Arizona officially released its schedule, which we broke down a couple months ago.
• The Wildcats will reconvene on July 9 to begin prepping for the season.

Men’s golf

• Shoutout to former UA golfer Nate Lashley, who cruised to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic for his first PGA Tour victory. Fellow Wildcat Rory Sabbatini finished third.

Men’s tennis

• Head coach Clancy Shields was extended through 2022. He was the 2019 Pac-12 Coach of the Year and ITA Southwest Coach of the Year, and led the Wildcats to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010 this past season.

Women’s basketball

• Former UA forward LaBrittney Jones signed with BC Winterthur in Switzerland.

Volleyball

• Former UA All-American Madi Kingdon was named to the USA Volleyball Pan American roster.

Football

• Arizona has to replace its top four wide receivers, and here is a look at who can fill that void.
• Arizona got a commitment from Woody Jean, a three-star tackle from Deerfield Beach, Florida.
• The Wildcats also landed Drake Dabney, a three-star tight end from Texas.
• Arizona’s over/under win total was set at 7.
• We broke down which newcomers we think can make an immediate impact for the Wildcats.
• Arizona opens training camp on July 26.
• Some more upgrades to Arizona Stadium’s west side were announced, including TVs installed around the concourse, new restroom trailers, new lighting, and a festival area with food and drinks.

Men’s basketball

• Joseph Blair was hired by the Sixers an assistant coach after he coached the Houston Rockets’ G League affiliate to a championship.
• NBA free agency started Sunday and four Wildcats are on the open market. As of Monday morning, none have found new homes.
• However, Andre Iguodala did get traded by the Warriors to the Grizzlies in a salary dump that allowed Golden State to acquire All-Star guard D’Angelo Russell.
• The attorney for ex-Arizona assistant Mark Phelps is claiming defamation, and says Phelps’ firing was to help offset potential NCAA sanctions
• Brandon Ashley will be playing for the Sacramento Kings in NBA Summer League.
• Arizona hosted 2020 4-star wing Dalen Terry.
• Junior guard Alex Barcello announced that he is leaving the Wildcats, while Devonaire Doutrive, who had previously announced he was transferring, revealed that he will be staying at Arizona.
• Those two moves, which happened the same day, mean the Wildcats still have 13 players under scholarship for the 2019-20 season, the maximum allowed per team. However, there might be more moves coming, seeing that Arizona reportedly offered a spot to Eastern Kentucky graduate transfer Dujuanta Weaver.
