Wildcat Wrap: Devonaire Doutrive’s transfer helps Arizona sort out roster crunch

It was an eventful week for the Arizona Wildcats, both good and bad, so let’s recap it. Let us know in the comment section if we missed anything.

Softball

• Arizona softball is back in the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 2010 after sweeping Ole Miss in Super Regionals.
• We have the ups and downs from Supers sweep.
• UA softball begins its quest for its ninth national championship on Thursday in Oklahoma City at 9 a.m. against No.3 seed Washington.
• The Huskies, last year’s national runner-up, swept the ‘Cats in Tucson earlier in May, but the Wildcats believe they are a different team now.
• Arizona’s win fulfilled a promise the team made to coach Mike Candrea.
• The chemistry the team fostered during the season was critical in getting them back to the WCWS.
• From alums, media and fans of the game, there were a lot tweets and posts about the ‘Cats heading back to the big stage.
• No. 2 starter Alyssa Denham has stepped up her game in the postseason.

Women’s Golf

• Over the last year, the team has given Wildcat fans great memories. The team tried its best to replicate last year’s magic, but their run to repeat as national champions ended in the semifinals against Duke by of score of 3-2.
• Haley Moore’s legend grew prior to facing Duke by sinking a birdie on the final hole to defeat USC 3-2.
• Moore, Bianca Pagdanganan and Yu-Sang Hou made Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American teams. Pagdanganan and Hou were second team selections, Moore was honorable mention.

Baseball

• Arizona missed the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, which head coach Jay Johnson thought was a fair outcome after the team went 3-16 against top-50 teams.

Women’s Basketball

• The ‘Cats landed two transfers in Shaina Pellington and Amari Carter.
• Pellington was the 2018 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, but was held out for five games for Oklahoma in February for unspecified violations of team rules. She averaged 13.1 points per game while shooting 49.2 percent from the floor her freshman year. She has to sit out the upcoming season per NCAA transfer rules.
• Carter is a grad transfer from Penn State, who averaged 9.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals last season.

Track and Field

• The 4x400-meter relay team of Shannon Meisberger, Tatum Waggoner, Karolina Pahlitzsch, and Diana Gajda set a school record with a time of 3:30.67. The team earned their ticket to the NCAA Championships.
• Carlos Villarreal will compete in his third national championship since November. He ran a time of 3:39.67 to win the 1500-meter run.
• UA sends six entries to the NCAA Championships on June 5 in Austin, Texas.

Men’s Basketball

• Devonaire Doutrive is transferring. While his energy will be missed, it was not unexpected news, seeing that the Wildcats were two over the 13-scholarship limit after adding Jemarl Baker Jr. and Max Hazzard via transfers.
• Speaking of scholarships, here’s a reminder that Brandon Randolph has until May 29 to decide if he will stay in the NBA Draft.
• Terry Armstrong affirmed his commitment to the UA.
• Nevada transfer Jordan Brown visited Arizona, but will also visit Arizona State and Saint Mary’s.
• Andre Iguodala is expected to be ready for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors.
• The Pac-12 is putting restrictions on non-conference scheduling.

Football

• We analyzed defensive tackle Kyon Barrs, Arizona’s newest commit
• A public memorial service for legendary coach Dick Tomey will be held on Friday morning inside McKale Center. Tomey died on May 10 after a battle with lung cancer.
