Wildcat Wrap: Arizona Adaptive rugby wins second straight national championship

It’s Monday which means it is time to recap the week that was in Arizona Athletics.

First things first, let’s take a moment to recognize the Arizona Adaptive rugby team for capturing its second straight United States Quad Rugby Association championship. The Wildcats beat the Denver Harlequins 50-45 on Sunday.

Now for our usual programming...

Softball

• Arizona (27-7, 9-0 Pac-12) run-ruled Arizona State on Friday and Saturday 8-0, before finishing off the Sun Devils on Sunday with a 2-0 win. It is UA’s first-ever shutout sweep of ASU.
• UA takes a short break from conference play Wednesday when UTEP comes to town for a doubleheader. The ‘Cats then resume Pac-12 play when they head out to Salt Lake City to face Utah over the weekend.
• Denham was named Pac-12 Player of the Week. Denham no-hit Oregon State on March 24, it was the first no-no in her career.
• Sisters Jessie and MaKenna Harper played against each other for the first time ever this weekend.

Baseball

• If the ‘Cats (13-14, 2-7 Pac-12) haven’t hit rock bottom yet, they’re close. Arizona is riding a seven-game losing streak after being swept by ASU over the weekend.
• As the current ‘Cats do soul searching, five former UA players made MLB Opening Day rosters.
• UA hosts Washington this weekend.

Women’s Basketball

• If you win, they will come. Coach Adia Barnes had to do more than plan for the WNIT Sweet 16 game this week against Idaho: She had to put her marketing hat on to get UA fans and students into McKale Center.
• Barnes was on Twitter doing the best she could to entice fans to pack the stands for the game, and she had 6,307 reasons to be happy.
• That number was the attendance to see UA defeat the Vandals, 68-60.
• Barnes and her team were grateful their hard work on and off the court is being embraced by their fans.
• With over 7,000 fans in McKale on Sunday, Arizona beat Wyoming 67-45 to advance to the WNIT Final Four.
• UA hosts TCU on Wednesday for the chance to play for the WNIT championship. Barnes and company want 10,000 fans.

Men’s Golf

• Arizona placed 16th at The Goodwin in California. Brad Reeves tied for ninth and Trevor Webylo tied for 19th. The ‘Cats play next at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, California on April 13th-14th.

Soccer

• Arizona beat ASU 5-3 in spring ball, its fifth straight win over the Sun Devils.
• Midfielder Jules Dominguez is using the spring season to regain her confidence after a “freak” accident robbed her of entire freshman season.

Women’s Golf

• Ya Chun Chang tied for 13th place at the PING ASU Invitational over the weekend. Sandra Nordaas placed tied for 32^nd and Desiree Hong tied for 82^nd.
• The defending national champs hit the links again from April 15-17 for the Pac-12 Championships.

Men’s Tennis

• ASU beat UA 4-2 on Saturday. Filip Malbasic and Alejandro Reguant won in doubles play for the ‘Cats, while Carlos Hassey and Jonas Maier won in singles competition. UA hosts Washington on Friday.

Women’s Tennis

• Arizona lost to Washington State on Sunday, 6-1.
• Sophia Thomas was the lone victor for UA.

Track and Field

• Bailey Roth was the top Wildcat at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, finishing in the top-10 of the 3K steeplechase.
• UA is at home on Thursday for the Jim Click Multi-Evens. Arizona hosts the Jim Click Shootout on Saturday.

Men’s Basketball

• Lauri Markkanen was shut down for the rest of the season by the Bulls.
• Josh Green and Nico Mannion both scored eight points in the McDonald’s All-American Game.
• Deandre Ayton suffered an ankle sprain and could be out for the season.

Football

• Former NFL star DeMarco Murray discussed why he decided to coach at Arizona and some other things.
• Khalil Tate talked about what went wrong last season and why he returned for his senior season.
• Center Josh McCauley is an “iron man” for the program, but is still not on scholarship.
• UA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone shared his thoughts on Tate’s 2019 season and their relationship moving forward.
• Length and size remain priorities for Arizona on recruiting trail.
