Arizona softball run-rules Utah for 12th straight win

Make it a dozen wins in a row for Arizona softball.

The ninth-ranked Wildcats run-ruled Utah 13-0 in five innings Friday in Salt Lake City to extend their winning streak to 12.

It’s just the third time in program history Arizona (30-7) has won its first 10 conference games. The Wildcats have outscored their Pac-12 counterparts 81-8 this season and have run-ruled their opponent in five innings in seven of 10 conference games.

Taylor McQuillin, the reigning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, threw her fourth straight shutout. The senior left-hander limited the Utes to just two hits while striking out six.

Jessie Harper blasted her 20th homer of the season, taking the NCAA lead. Malia Martinez went 4 for 4 with a three-run double and a two-run homer. Peanut Martinez launched a two-run homer, her second career long ball. Rylee Pierce drove in two runs with an RBI single and RBI groundout. Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza and Reyna Carranco each had a sac fly.

Game 2 is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. MST. The Wildcats have gone five straight conference games without allowing a run.

Scary moment

Designated player T Statman exited in the fourth inning after taking a pitch to the eye. Her face immediately turned black and blue, but she was smiling as she left the field.

The senior is hitting .340 in 20 starts. Statman doubled and scored in the second inning.
