Wildcat Wrap: Recapping a busy week of Arizona Athletics

It is Tuesday, so it’s time to take a look back at the week that was for the Arizona Wildcats. Let us know in the comment section if we missed anything!

Softball

• Arizona went 4-1 in the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, improving to 9-5 on the season.
• After its game vs. Missouri got rained out Thursday, UA faced No. 20 Oklahoma State first on Friday and got a 3-0 win behind a strong pitching performance from Taylor McQuillin.
• A tilt against UC Santa Barbara opened Saturday’s events for UA. Freshman Marissa Schuld (1-0) got the start for the first time in her UA career and got her first win.
• Arizona faced No. 4 Oklahoma in game two on Saturday and G Juarez, a transfer from ASU, carried a no-hitter into the seventh before the Wildcats scratched a run. But it too little too late, as the Wildcats would lose 2-1.
• Gina Snyder made her debut in the circle and shutout Team Japan, a squad that is ranked No. 2 in the world and was 10-0 in its US collegiate tour.
• Taryne Mowatt sat down with us to talk about year two as Arizona’s pitching coach.
• Who is the best athlete on the UA softball team? It just might be utility player Ivy Davis.
• Arizona faces Drake on Thursday and then begins the Wildcat Invitational, which runs Friday through Sunday.

Baseball

• The ‘Cats (6-2) kept their hot hitting going against Rice on Wednesday, racking up 17 hits as they beat the Owls 16-5 in Houston in their first road game.
• However, the BatCats were cooled off on Friday in their first game against Houston, falling 2-1.
• On Saturday the Wildcats were trailing 9-3 when Cameron Cannon hit a three-run homer over the left-center field to pull the ‘Cats closer, though it would not not be enough.
• Arizona managed to take the final game of the series Sunday, winning 9-4.
• The Wildcats host New Mexico on Wednesday and then welcome Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a weekend series.

Women’s Basketball

• Arizona blew late leads in road losses to Stanford and Cal, falling to 17-10 overall and 7-9 in the Pac-12. The Wildcats wrap up the regular season against highly-ranked Oregon and Oregon State this week and will need to split to have a chance to make the NCAA Tournament, albeit a slim one.
• Aari McDonald broke Adia Barnes’ single-season scoring record during the Cal game. Barnes scored 653 points in the 1997-98 season. She and McDonald are the only two UA players to amass 600 points.

Women’s Golf

• The defending national champions won their first event of the season, capturing the Rebel Beach Invitational on Tuesday.
• Bianca Pagdanganan finished tied for third at 3-over after a final round 78 (+6).
• UA is back in action on March 11 when it hosts the Wildcat Invitational at Sewailo Golf Club.

Men’s Tennis

• The team brought home hardware over weekend by winning the Blue/Gray Tournament Championship over Ole Miss.
• Arizona defeated the Rebels 4-1 thanks to wins from Alejandro Reguant, Carlos Hassey and Filip Malbasic.
• UA heads to California to play Cal Poly on Thursday, UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.

Women’s Tennis

• The Wildcats snapped their three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with wins over Sacramento State and Liberty.
• Emma Wilson and Gitte Heynemans won their two singles matches. Heynemans also won both of her doubles matches with her partner, Camila Wesbrooks.
• The team hosts BYU on Friday, UNLV and Portland on Sunday.

Track and Field

• The ‘Cats closed out the MPSF Championships on Friday, winning two event titles. The women’s team placed fifth with 51 points and the men finished sixth with 56 points.
• Jordan Geist and Lillian Lowe claimed MPSF titles in their respective events. Geist threw a mark of 20.79m on his final throw in the shot put to win the conference title. Lowe cleared 1.79m to defend her high jump title.
• Next time the teams are in action will be March 8 in Birmingham, Alabama for the NCAA Championships.

Hockey

• The ‘Cats on ice swept ASU over the weekend. UA beat the Sun Devils 4-0 on Friday to retain the Cactus Cup. Arizona won 4-1 on Sunday.
• UA and ASU will dual on the ice two more time to close out the regular season on March 2-3 in Tempe.

Soccer

• Four players have transferred from the program, including top assister Amanda Porter, but coach Tony Amato isn’t fazed.
• Porter started every game last season for UA, but said she is “looking for a change.” Hailey Clifford, Michaela Rentner and Makayla Aman are the other three that transferred.

Men’s Golf

• UA placed seventh in Hawaii at the John Burns Intercollegiate with a score of 858(-6).
• Ethan Marcus was the highest UA finisher as he tied for 16th with a score of 212 (-4).
• The ‘Cats head south to Mexico from March 3-5 for the Cabo Collegiate at Querencia.

Football

• The Cole and Jeannie Davis Sports Center opened on Sunday. It is nice.

Men’s Basketball

• Arizona (16-12, 7-8 Pac-12) broke its seven-game losing streak with a 76-51 beating of California on Thursday, then routed Stanford on Sunday for the 19th straight time.
• Here is what we learned from those games.
• Brandon Williams played against Stanford after missing the last six games with a knee injury and the plan is for him to have an increase role against the Oregon schools this week.
• The win on Sunday ties UA with Stanford and Colorado for seventh in conference. The ‘Cats remain two games behind Utah for fourth in conference, and that position is the last to get a first-round bye in the Pac-12 Tournament.

• Ira Lee is playing the best basketball of his career, and showing plenty of emotion while doing it.
• Lute Olson was admitted to the hospital after suffering a minor stroke. He is expected to make a full recovery.
• Oumar Ballo, a center from Mali, committed to Gonzaga over the weekend. He had Arizona and Baylor in his top three.
• Sean Miller will be subpoenaed in upcoming federal basketball trial, according to a report from Yahoo!
• Mike Bibby has been accused of sexual abuse.
