Gina Snyder throws shutout as Arizona softball beats Team Japan

The Arizona Wildcats have touted their pitching depth all season, and it was on full display Saturday. Redshirt senior Gina Snyder tossed a four-hit shutout as Arizona squeaked past Team Japan 1-0 in an exhibition to wrap up the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs.

It was Snyder’s first appearance of the season, though it technically will not go in the record books.

Snyder struck out five, walked one and hit four batters. Team Japan, the No. 2 team in the world, had plenty of scoring opportunities, but Snyder was able to dance out of danger several times, stranding 10 runners on base.

Snyder has an incredible backstory. The Sahuaro High product walked on to Arizona’s roster prior to the 2018 season after spending two seasons at Purdue and overcoming a debilitating illness that threatened her life and softball career.

Dejah Mulipola supplied the lone run of the game by smacking a solo homer to left in the bottom of the sixth.

Arizona split games against UC Santa Barbara and No. 4 Oklahoma earlier in the day, leaving Palm Springs with a 9-5 record.
