Arizona Wildcats to retire Trevor Hoffman’s jersey
The Arizona Wildcats will retire Trevor Hoffman’s jersey on Feb. 15 at Hi Corbett Field, the UA announced Monday.
The ceremony will be conducted before Arizona’s season-opener vs. UMass-Lowell. Hoffman will throw out the first pitch and the first 2,500 fans will receive a Hoffman bobblehead.
Hoffman will become the second former Wildcat to have his jersey retired, the other being Terry Francona. Hoffman met the criteria by being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last July. The seven-time All-Star spent 18 years in the MLB, compiling 601 saves as one of the game’s most dominant relief pitchers.
Francona met the criteria by winning the Golden Spikes Award in 1980.
Hoffman, who wore No. 15 at Arizona, played at the UA in 1988 and 1989 as a shortstop, hitting .371 as a junior in 1988 with 11 doubles and 45 RBI. In 1989, Hoffman hit .284 with 13 doubles, six home runs and 38 RBI and was named First-Team All-Pac-10 South.
We are ecstatic to announce that on Opening Day, we will officially retire Trevor Hoffman’s jersey in a pregame ceremony. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Hoffman Bobble Head!
