Report: Texas Southern to hire Arizona assistant Clarence McKinney as head coach

Kevin Sumlin will be making at least one change to his Arizona Wildcats coaching staff for the 2019 season. Nope, not either of the ones you were thinking/expecting/hoping for.

Scott Roussel of FootballScoop.com is reporting that Clarence McKinney, who is Arizona’s running backs coach and associate head coach, will be named head coach at Texas Southern on Monday.

Texas Southern is an FCS school based in Houston, where McKinney’s career began as a high school coach. Since 2008 he’s been part of Sumlin’s college staffs, first at Houston and then Texas A&M before coming with him to Arizona this year.

Arizona led the Pac-12 in rushing under McKinney, averaging 202.4 yards per game. Sophomore J.J. Taylor’s 1,434 yards were the most by a Wildcat since 2014.

FootballScoop initially reported on Wednesday that McKinney was the top candidate to coach the Tigers, who were 2-9 this season.
