Nick Foles torches Texans defense to keep Eagles’ playoff hopes alive

Maybe Nick Foles should have been starting all along?

The former Arizona Wildcats star threw for a franchise-record 471 yards and four touchdowns in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 32-30 home win over the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The win keeps defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia (8-7) in the playoff hunt. The Eagles are chasing the Minnesota Vikings (8-6-1) and Seattle Seahawks (8-6) for an NFC wild card spot.

Foles, who was 35 for 49 and set a career high in passing yards, completed a pair of long throws on 3^rd and 10 during the game-winning drive—taking a hard hit to the chest by Jadeveon Clowney on the first, forcing him to miss one snap—to set up Jake Elliott’s 35-yard field goal at the buzzer.

It was Foles’ second straight masterful performance since stepping in for starter Carson Wentz, who is out with a back injury. He threw for 270 yards on 24-of-31 passing last week in an upset win at the Los Angeles Rams.

Foles is now 8-2 in relief of Wentz, including last year when Wentz tore his ACL in early December and Foles started the final three games of the regular season and all three playoff games. He threw for 373 yards and three TDs in Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, earning MVP honors.
